D&D Week 10: He slimed me.

January 7th, 2009 18 comments

After the usual “okay, who’s in the lead now?” chaos, we get rolling. Walking along, minding our own business, we spot some slime. Moving slime. Instantly the decision is made to douse it in oil and set it on fire. Our rogue throws oil at the slime, but misses spectacularly and soaks the Dwarf leading the charge. Looks like the burning starts early tonight!
This is longer than I thought, so the rest is behind a cut. Click here for gory details!

D&D Week 9 nutshell

December 16th, 2008 10 comments

We tied a rope to the Dwarf and threw him in the water. He got out okay. Then we wandered around lost for a while. Then we got ambushed.
Then, to round out the experience, I got set on fire. Just another day at the office.

The longer version.

D&D Week 6

November 18th, 2008 4 comments

I missed last week, so I must rely on secondhand reports of what happened.

According to our wizard, last week “a badger killed a zombie by crunching his undead-boy-parts.” The kobold hireling who robbed me the previous week ran off with another kobold we rescued in the mines, so it looks like I’ll never see my money again. I was told that I need to not miss weeks anymore, as “we need you to absorb the bad luck.” Thanks.

Also, the group killed a necromancer and discovered a magical puzzle, which we worked on this week. Details of that exciting adventure to come later!

D&D Week 4

October 22nd, 2008 10 comments

This week’s session was a little lower key than usual, because we had some business to take care of at the start, what with leveling up and buying new supplies and one of our members going powermad and declaring himself the head of the party. Life of the party, maybe, head of the party, no. I picked up some more arrows. Our rogue picked up some more oil in case he wanted to set anyone else on fire.

On the way back to our certain doom, we noticed a body just outside the mines. Apparently it had been there all along, and we were so busy being gnawed on by giant rats that we didn’t notice it the first time we went in. Someone shot an arrow at us, so naturally instead of assessing the situation, my fellow Dwarf and I made a mad charge into danger.

We found three Dwarven miners tied up by mercenaries, mercenaries whom the party proceeded to beat the living tar out of. One enemy was set on fire, but that was intentional. Our rogue fell unconscious after untying a miner to fight on our behalf. Once he was free, the miner basically wet himself in fear and cowered. Unfortunately, since the rogue turned his back to the action to untie the captive, he got shot and fell unconscious. Now, some might say that turning your back on the enemy to free a captive who then refuses to fight may be a foolish action, but I say it was actually very noble and helpful. I credit our party’s lack of accidental burning to the rogue’s unconsciousness. Kudos, rogue!

We killed all our of enemies except one, whom we decided to keep for questioning. I got out my rope and narrowly avoided tying myself to him. Based on past performance, I credit that as a win. Then we untied the Dwarven miner captives, who were so ticked off at having been captured that they promptly bludgeoned the bound mercenary to death. So much for information.

It was at this point that our rogue, no longer unconscious, managed to antagonize the former captives to the point that they started whaling on him with their bare hands. We managed to pull them off of him and got some good info. We also got a really cool coffer as a reward from the miners. The catch is that the key is somewhere in the mines, aka The Tunnels of Humiliation and Burning.

All in all, it was a good session, with a lot of good setup for next time. We all lived, no party members were set on fire, so let’s call it a success! Yay!

D&D week 3

October 15th, 2008 18 comments

This week:

I was nearly brained several times by party members with quarterstaffs. For a while I thought it was all coming at just me, but then the Elf nearly got axed in the nards, so there you have it.

Two party members attempted to set an entire passageway ablaze with a wall of flame to incinerate our enemies. They succeeded in setting a third the passageway on fire in a thin line to a height of about six inches.

The element of surprise gone, we charged into a chamber that we thought had a few skeletons inside, only to find that… well, you know that scene at the end of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? Yeah, it was that, but with undead instead of Bolivians.

In the course of the battle, our hireling set himself on fire. It’s not D&D night unless someone’s on fire.

Things took a bit of a turn for the worse when my Dwarf was enchanted by a kobold necromancer and started fighting against the party. Sorry, guys.

In the end, though, we defeated the bad guys and earned enough experience to level. I got shoved down a flight of stairs for some heavy damage, and our rogue came within one point of passing out, but nobody died, so I’ll call it a success. So far, so good!

D&D week 2

October 8th, 2008 32 comments

Last night in D&D:

  • Our party discovered we’d been systematically pickpocketed by our hired help.
  • We rescued some Dwarven miners and then accidentally set them on fire.
  • I inadvertently tied myself to an oiled miner. A party member stabbed me trying to cut the rope.
  • It took us three hours to open a door behind which another party member languished.
  • My Dwarf’s beard was shot off by a fellow party member.

So all in all, a good night for us.

Man, do we suck.

Adventuring with Michael Scott

October 1st, 2008 4 comments

I’m tired this morning, but happy. I joined a play-by-chat-room D&D campaign and our first session started at 9pm last night. About midnight, I was fading, but the DM encouraged me to stay 25 more minutes, so I did. Unfortunately, as always happens in these games, 25 minutes stretched and I didn’t log off until about 1am. D’oh!

It’s a very good DM. If I didn’t know that he was so scrupulous, though, I’d suspect that perhaps me getting attacked so often last night was some kind of revenge, what with me accidentally getting our entire party, including him, killed by mind flayers last time we played. Hey, these things happen. However, he is scrupulous, and entertaining, and as I say, a very good DM.

It’s a good group, too. Sample dialogue from last night: we were entering a mine and came to a lift that could take us down into the depths. My Dwarf, Palin (what, it’s a good Dwarven name!), was concerned that it might be too loud and alert any creatures that we were coming.

Palin: I hope the winch is oiled up.
Val, our rogue: That’s what she said.

This is the level of discourse, my friends. Just the way I like it. However, from now on, I can’t stay up until 1am. I feel fine now, but I have a feeling that around 2pm I’m going to be hurtin’. Hopefully I’ll still be bright eyed for the Pushing Daisies premiere tonight.

In spite of the late night, I WILL go running this morning, once it warms up a little. Until then, I’m stamping boxes and getting Jayne hats ready to ship out. I’m also doing some laundry, which seems to call for this little gem from the Oct 1943 Better Homes and Gardens. If, like me, your eyes are going, you can click on “all sizes” and “original” on the flickr page to read the text the most clearly.

Okay, time to put some drops in the cat’s ears, hang out some clothes, and stamp some boxes!
