Cool stuff!

February 23rd, 2005 No comments

In case anybody isn’t on houseofdanie (the former Tessima)’s LJ list, let me point you toward it. She’s making crazy cool plastic stuff to support breast cancer research. After getting some much deserved sleep, you can bet your keister I’m dropping her a line to order something.

Brownie recipe

February 23rd, 2005 4 comments

This one’s pretty easy, and you don’t get too many dishes dirty. I like it because I always have cocoa powder around the house, since I like to make hot cocoa from scratch whenever snow’s in the forecast.

1/2 cup butter or margarine (whatever it is, it should be solid, not in a tub.)
1 cup white sugar
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 t baking powder
1/4 t salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 8×8″ baking pan.

Combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Melt butter in saucepan. Remove from heat, stir in sugar and cocoa. Beat in eggs, 1 at a time, then stir in vanilla.

Stir dry ingredients into chocolate mixture until just blended. (This may be a workout for your arm!) Spread into pan.

Bake for 25 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool in pan, preferably on wire rack.

Won’t somebody think of the children??

February 14th, 2005 10 comments

My daughter’s favorite game to play is Sims 2. She loves to create the same families over and over, giving them identical appearances and names, and make insanely large houses for them, all in the same neighborhood. This leads to five identical people all visiting at one house, which is difficult to keep track of, to say the least.

She also likes to create swimming pools and make the Sims dive in repeatedly even when they really just want to lie the hell down and go to sleep. Pee on your own time, pal, you’re diving now!

But the thing she loves more than anything else is to make the little kids do “Miss Mary Mack” with each other. If kids could die in Sims 2, she would have Mary Macked some of them to death by now. This creates a problem, as they skip school to Mary Mack, they neglect their homework to Mary Mack, they don’t eat to Mary Mack. I keep having to find ways to thwart her so that I can stop the social worker from taking the kids away, which would be a bit upsetting, I think. It’s like she’s some capricious god, or that uber-powerful guy in that old Star Trek TOS episode – if you’re a geek, you know the one I mean.

Pity the poor population of Pleasantview, and their families of Starbucks employees, Madeleine replicants, Groovy Girl families, and ragged, Twilight-Zoned out kids. May God have mercy on their digital souls.

Well, thanks to the intestinal bug my daughter gave me, I’ve lost 3 pounds in the last 24 hours.

Thanks, but I’d rather be fat than lose the weight like this. Ugh.

Somehow, I don’t think I should count this.

Okay, crawling back into bed again until the next bout.

Children are a gift…

…that keep on giving. And mine appears to have given me whatever pukey stomach virus she had on Sunday and Monday.

Worst. Birthday gift. Ever.

Primary Goal: don’t be fatter at this year’s Simucon than last year’s.
“Impossible Dream” Goal: weigh less than you did at Simucon 2 years ago.

It’s my birthday, so no time like the present. Let’s shoot for the Impossible Dream.

Aaaaand….. GO!

Apparently, though, I am exceptionally evil. And gratified.

However, tomorrow is my birthday, and when I plugged in my new age, I learned that I will apparently become much, much less evil tomorrow. Ah, well. We all mellow.

From bad to worse.

February 6th, 2005 8 comments

What had been just some kind of garden variety cold bug for my daughter seems to have gotten worse, with her waking up, stumbling out of bed, and throwing up all over the house tonight. Twice. Plus other intestinal problems.

Poor baby.

If I’m not answering your IMs, it’s because I’m tending to my daughter. Here’s hoping it’s all over soon and she’s back to her happy, weird self.
