Opinions and a Kanji question!

Okay, I started that Koigu shawl, but I think I’ve gone *too* basic. Does this need a lacier or more interesting pattern? It’s by no means too late to start over, and I’m already starting to feel like maybe fifty bazillion rows of slightly increasing garter stitch is going to be boring knitting. And by the way, it’s not bilious pink, as it appears in the pic.

Next question, does anyone out there know what this means, if anything? It’s a button which will serve as a clasp for a purse I’m doing for my mother for her birthday, and I’d like it if it weren’t a symbol meaning, “go self-pleasure yourself with a banana” or something. Right now all I can figure is it’s a picture vaguely resembling two mushrooms over a dot. Anyone know anything else?

    hmmm…

I respect the not too girly version of the shawl you are making, but I think I’d put more yos in it to make it a bit more airy… and not so heavy/warm.

How about something with a base 3 stitch? like row 1: purl, row 2: k1, *k3, pull first st over other 2 and yo* repeat to last 2 sts, k2. row 3: purl row 4: k2, *yo, k3, pull first st over other 2* repeat to last st and k1.

    just an idea…

    Re: hmmm…

Cool idea. I haven’t done something where I pulled the first stitch over the other two before. I’m always up for something new!

I’m also looking at maybe something like this, (also here) which looks like more or less the same thing I’m doing now, but with a row of yo, k2tog thrown in every five or ten rows. It bears thought.

    Yo, ‘vini.

I asked around on a couple Japanese language forum boards and a mailing list devoted to… well, nevermind what exactly before I offend ten thousand Christians, but it’s full of people who definitely would have recognized if the character meant anything in the realm of obscure religion\spirituality.

Only one hit. Apparently it’s very close to the kanji character that means “extra” (it’s written as omake – and from what I can tell it has a connotation of “special bonus” rather than “unneeded overflow”) but other than that, we’re thinking it’s just an abstract with no meaning. In any case, based on all the negative replies from the relevant people I inquired of, it’s not something popular enough that your mother will be likely to run into a Japanese who recognizes it as an obscure symbol meaning “I enjoy copulating with fruit.”

    Thanks! That’s very helpful!

And it’s good to know also because my mother does not copulate with fruit. That I know of.

Ew, now I have to go take a shower with a brillo pad.

Sometimes, it’s better not to ask, isn’t it?
