Struck By Lightning

Still knocked out by allergies or whatever. Yesterday I didn’t take Benadryl until evening, as it’s not really fair to Em for me to be out of commission for the whole day. Of course, pushing her on the swing outside isn’t exactly the best thing, but again, you do what you gotta. If it were just one day, then I think I could get away with keeping her cooped up inside, but it’s not, and she’s working hard on the EOG (end of grade) tests at her school, so she deserves a good time.

The Benadryl is giving me weird dreams. A couple of days ago as I drifted off, I had what I thought was a great idea. It’d be marketable, I could make it without too much trouble, and it’d be inexpensive to produce. I decided I was so sleepy I didn’t want to get up to write it down, but how could I possibly forget what it was?

Needless to say, I forgot. Of course, as hopped up as I was, it could have been an automatic carrot launcher or something. Who knows?

Last night I dreamed that someone was over and spending the night. She was going to share my bed, but in the morning I discovered that my cat had fleas and I was worried about her and the house. Then I was joking around with the cleaning crew that had mysteriously showed up. I’m fairly sure this is because a) I saw an episode of Dead Like Me where two co-workers had to bunk together, and b) I haven’t been able to clean at all over the last couple of days and the house is in a bad state and it’s depressing.

I’m about to send out mail canceling Brownies today. I’m no good to anyone like this.

Today’s Emily art was done last night. We had a big storm come through here with thunder and lightning. I love the unhappy expression and “oh no” of the figure at left, but I also love the bug eyes and crazy hair of the lightning victim on the right. Even more, I love that she spelled “lightning” right for this context, which is more than 75% of the internet can do.

Okay, time for another exciting day of lying on the couch watching Voyager reruns and trying to breathe.

H, that sounds awful. I hope you’re considering going to a doctor to maybe get at least something that will not knock you out.

Back in college days I had no inkling I might have allergies during pollen season and it got to the point where they had to put me on corticosteroids. I have not had another recurrence; it just happened that one time. So just saying – even if you’ve never had it bad before, sometimes the ‘conditions’ hit you just right (or wrong). Take care, okay?

I have the worst allergies on the planet and sometimes all I want to do when I wake up in the morning is take Benadryl and go back to bed… But since this is not altogether practical, I use other anti-histamines which are less sleep-inducing. If I were you, I would keep taking Benadryl at night but in the morning try taking an anti-histamine called Allegra-D (they have decongestant in them which I find helps make the first few hours of my day much more bearable). I don’t find it makes me drowsy (YMMV) and it seems to last for 8 to 12 hours depending on the pollen counts that day and the amount of time I spend outside. Other people swear by Claritin and Aerius but they do nothing for me. I find between the Allegra and the Benadryl at night I’m able to sleep and still be functional in the daytime.

Here’s hoping hayfever season ends soon.

Thanks! I’ve tried Claritin – the old style Claritin that they hide behind the counter now to keep it away from the meth addicts – and it didn’t do squat. I’ll look into Allegra-D.

I’m also hopeful that maybe things are finally winding down with pollen season. I never had this problem growing up, so I’m still learning about it.

Yeah, the last five years or so it’s started to get me. Some years are better than others.

I think it’s mainly the tree pollen. We have a gigantic oak tree in the back yard, and Jetsy has that gigantic tree that was raining pollen down on our heads on Sunday. I’m hopeful that the rain will help keep the pollen under control.

As a fellow spring allergy sufferer, I am sending you my sympathy. Aside from the sneezing, running nose, and swollen eyes, I feel like I’m under water for several months. I now take Benadryl only at night. It acts as a sleep aid, and also knocks the daytime allergies down enough to make (usually) them manageable without further pill taking. If I must take a pill during the day, I use one of the OTC non-drowsy sorts. Currently, I am enamored with kids’ something or other. It’s grape flavored, and I can just nibble off a piece – the whole pill makes me so antsy I want to claw off my own skin. I can’t imagine the effect of taking a daytime Benadryl – it must be awful!

Yeah, that tree is evil. But more importantly, I LOVE Emily’s picture. That is so awesome, as is her spelling prowess!

I really like zyrtec for allergies, and it’s now available OTC. Claritin didn’t work for me, but zyrtec does, and without knocking me out like benadryl (which I only take at bedtime). You might look into it?
