Ride ’em, cowgirl!

The day did improve. The Brownies all had a great time riding, including my girl, who got to brush, help tack, and ride a horse without being led. She was pretty tired before her turn to ride even came up, but she really did a fantastic job. I could not be prouder. As she said after she dismounted, “Tonight, I’m going to dream about horses.”

    That’s awesome!

Do you know of any programs in your area which use horses as therapy? I don’t know about Emily’s particular therapy needs or goals, but I seem to recall that in our area there’s a therapeutic riding center which may or may not do things with kids with autism, etc. I was also thinking of Temple Grandin and how she relates to large animals, though she does more with cows. I know I’ve heard of folks who specialize in helping fit various tasks — brushing the horse, etc. — to ways of addressing various behavioral issues, helping a kid calm down and focus while gaining more responsibility.

Thanks! The horses they put the girls on were so docile that I think Emily’s horse actually fell asleep at a couple of points.

I don’t know of any therapy horses around here, however I do have an aunt who owns a stable not too far away. If we can work it into my cousin’s schedule (she does lessons and such there) then we’ll try to get up there some this summer.

It’s funny. I used to hear “Rainman” every time I told someone Emily was autistic. Now I hear “Temple Grandin.” Constantly. On the up side, I guess it’s good that peoples’ automatic mental picture is changing from “crippling disability” to “inspirational success story.” 🙂

I know that you brought up Temple Grandin because of the large animal connection, so please don’t take this apply to you, or to be a bad thing.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I got a gift bag of stationery from one of the moms, who talked about how grateful they all are and how much her daughter looks forward to the meetings. So I guess that’s going well too. 🙂
