Brief updates.

Brief updatelets!

Dr. Horrible part two comes out tomorrow. Or tonight at midnight, if you’ve got a late night planned.

Someone in the Charlotte Browncoats pointed this out – Dr. Horrible has a Serenity model hanging in his window. Heh.

The Charlotte Browncoats are having a picnic Saturday which happens to be taking place at the park directly across the street from my house, so I reckon we’ll go to that. There’s a nice playground for Em.

Em’s in “dramatic action” camp this week. Monday, they tried on costumes and did a dance. Tuesday, they made masks and puppets. Yesterday, they sang a selection from High School Musical. Em’s solo: saying “Ay, que fabulosa!” She seems to be having a good time. That’s good, because if I’d realized how far away from our house this camp was when we signed up, I might have had second thoughts. Between camp and errands, I’m driving a good 40 miles a day. Al Gore’s going to slash my tires.

Enjoying watching a lot of Clean House, and also watching Carrier, which I recommend.

Just got done reading The Last Colony by John Scalzi. He’s a very Heinleinian writer. “Updatelets” and “Heinleinian” – I’m making up words left and right here tonight! That’s what happens when I drink pomegranate tea at night instead of coffee.

I made my whopping one pound goal today and set another goal. Still doing Couch to 5k faithfully. It’ll be much harder to do next week when there are no camps and I don’t have any time in the morning to myself. By the time my husband’s home, it’s broiling hot and I just don’t have it in me. I guess I can always do wii running.

Okay, bedtime.

Dr. Horrible and wii fit

July 15th, 2008 24 comments

First things first: Dr. Horrible’s Singalong Blog is great. It launched today and you’ve got a few days to try it free before it goes pay-only. Unfortunately, everybody else wants to see it RIGHT NOW too, so as reported today in the L.A. Times, the site went down faster than an original show on FOX. Rather than wait, I spent $4 for a season pass on iTunes. That’s a buck an episode, and it’s definitely worth it. C’mon, Neil Patrick Harris as a low-rent supervillain, Felicia Day as the girl at his laundromat he’s too shy to talk to and Nathan Fillion as his nemesis? And they sing? What’s not to love?

Look, just watch it. You can thank me later.

Next! I know what you’re wondering. “Tvini, how could you keep us waiting more than 24 hours for another scintillating report on the wii fit? I got a blister on my index finger from clicking ‘refresh’!”

Worry no more, fair readers. Our long national nightmare is over.

Yesterday morning, my mom stopped by while I was working out. We looked at the various options and she tried some along with me, albeit not on the board, since that would be a little crowded. One that we looked at was the plank. Or as I call it, since I shake like crazy, “the prone DTs.” It was my first time doing it on the wii fit, although I’ve done it before on my own, so I opted for the lowest amount of time one could do it for, 30 seconds. My mom cut out halfway through, since she just wanted to see how the wii fit handled these things.

At right is my husband’s trainer, since I couldn’t very well take pictures of Casey doing it while I was also doing the exercise. Please note that his trainer gives him a hard time too. Casey was with me through the my whole routine, though, curse her leathery hide. My mother was also with me.

Casey said things like, “You’re doing great.” And “Are you dropping your hips?” And “You’re almost done.”

My mother said things like, “YEAH!!! YOU’RE DOING GREAT!!!” And, “GO GO GO! YOU’RE DOING SO FANTASTIC!!” And “WOW, YOU’RE ALMOST DONE! KEEP IT UP!!!” I tell you, I felt like a million bucks when I was done.

I think the fine people at Nintendo should fire Casey and get my mom into the studio to record their next trainer. We’d be a nation with abs of steel. I wonder what my my mom would charge for personal training. Hmmm…

Sure, my wii says I’m fat, but let’s cut to the meat of the matter.

Can’t Stop the Serenity

July 11th, 2008 4 comments

Busy day being sure I’m ahead on Jayne hat orders, but I just realized that I never did post about Charlotte’s Can’t Stop the Serenity event!

In a nutshell, everyone had fun and we raised more than double what we did last year. More than $6500 went to Equality Now. Go Browncoats!

Since I don’t have time for a long post, how about some pics? I’ll spare you the one of the pre-show festivities, with me and Turtlegirl and Illiane of Emergency Knitting Bag fame out at Charley’s restaurant, with me holding a snowflake martini up, looking three sheets to the wind even though I’ve only had a sip. I almost never drink, but when I do, I get very happy. Whee!

How fantastic do these lovely ladies look? Great costumes! Zoe even placed in our costume contest. One of these charmers won the Jayne hat, and they were just so over-the-top excited and squealy about it that I had to take a picture. Awwww!

For those wondering, yes, they are sitting in pews. We had our screening this year at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Sharon Amity Rd., and it was a great choice. We were able to do things we couldn’t last year, like have live entertainment in the form of Cedric from the Bedlam Bards, and also a local woman named Spot. Good stuff! There were also refreshments, and a huge space for all the many, many prizes donated.

Here’s a pic of Turtlegirl and Illiane examining the prizes they won. Turtlegirl also posted about the screening and the cotton Jayne hat she made while there. I managed to knock out a wool one myself.

And speaking of prizes, check it out! I bought extra raffle tickets because the prizes were so shiny. And because it was for charity. But the prizes definitely played a part. There were a couple of things I was really coveting, and I got ’em! Woo!

Look at the gorgeous Firefly pint glass! This was the perfect item for me. My husband brews beer, and I wanted this for him. It came with a business card for http://www.goodguycomics.com/ , so many thanks to them for their generous donation. It was much appreciated, and I will definitely visit them next time I need a unique gift.

I also won the other item I really, really wanted, which was this Fruity Oaty lunchbox! These are available at Things From Another World. At first glance, it may have appeared that the lunchbox was empty when I received it, but it was actually full of awesomeness and potential.

“But Tvini, what are you going to do with it?”

“Pompom storage!”

More pics can be seen on flickr here. I can’t wait until next year’s showing – each year’s seems to get better and better. No pressure, 2009 organizers!

Boy, I said I wasn’t going to make a long post, but I did go on a bit, didn’t I? That coffee musta kicked in!

I hope you all have a very shiny day!

wii fit update

July 10th, 2008 6 comments

Okay, so I’ve been doing the wii fit for a week. Let’s look at the results! The blue line represents my weight.

What the… ARGH! This wouldn’t be so frustrating if I hadn’t laughingly programmed in a goal of one pound in two weeks, just to see how the “goal” feature worked, when we first started it up. Now I have to lose 1.8 pounds. NOT HELPING!

At right: I blame my personal trainer, whom I am now calling “that b____ Casey.”

Okay, I might have done the horns. And the tail. But she is a b____.

Anyway, I did the Couch to 5K week one along the Little Sugar Creek greenway this morning, and it was great. So bite me, Casey.

Wiiiiii!

July 6th, 2008 20 comments

As I posted yesterday, we’re getting rid of our treadmill. One of the reasons for this is that my father got us an early Christmas gift – a Wii Fit! The funniest comment I’ve heard so far was from someone on Ravelry – they said they weren’t getting one because it was too hard to turn into a clothes rack. Heh.

TREADMILL – CHEAP!

July 5th, 2008 4 comments

We’re selling our treadmill! It works just fine, but as we try to de-clutter our house, we’re simply not using it enough to justify the space it takes up.

It’s a Pro-Form Cross Walk Dual Motion Cross Trainer. It looks almost exactly like this one.

We do not have the pulse earclip that it originally came with. It has an ACCUSMART motivational fitness monitor that reads time elapsed, speed, calories burned, and pulse (pulse obviously won’t help you without the earclip). It has the ability to incline. It comes with a safety shut off key, which is missing the clip to hold it onto your clothing. I say tie it to a clothespin or chip clip and you’re good. It supposedly folds up for easy storage under the bed, but we’ve never done that as our underbed area is taken up with bins of yarn.

Move it out of here yourself and we’ll let it go for $100. Contact me at heather at jaynehat dot com for more information or to snap up this baby!

Once more with convenient removal handle.

Another preemie to small newborn size hat, this time using Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sport Multi, 100% machine washable soft wool. It’s the same pattern – size 3 needles, 48 stitch caston, but this time with a little i-cord nub at the top. This is modeled over a large apple, and you can see it has to stretch a bit to fit over it.

I bought this yarn at Haus of Yarn in Nashville a few years ago on the way through Tennessee to St Louis for Simucon. It’s not my color at all, so I’m not sure why I got it. I last used it for a tiny pair of baby socks. It’s perfect for these little hats. I’ve got another pattern I want to write up, and I think this yarn will do just fine for it. When you’re making tiny little clothes, one skein goes a long way.

Tip o’ the iceberg.

July 4th, 2008 6 comments

Coming with me to the yarn swap tomorrow. Bin o’ Debbie Bliss Cathay, with some Karabella Aurora 8 mixed in. Got these when the Sewing Bird closed down… two years ago, maybe? I’m kind of feeling like if I haven’t used a yarn in two years, I’d rather have the space than the yarn.

I’m thinking $4 a ball, or 2 for $7. This stuff’s so pretty. Shiny and drapey and so, so pretty.

Still rooting around for more stuff.
