Shiny!

I finally hired some help with packing Jayne hats. She takes a lot of breaks and tends to nest in the straw.

This is why you should never hire family.

I hate Barbie.

November 4th, 2008 4 comments

I just walked in the door from the grocery store to hear my daughter singing “Oops… I Did It Again” by Britney Spears. Mr. Tvini asked her where she heard it, and she said it was from Barbie. Sure enough, it’s on Mattel’s Barbie website.

You know what I didn’t need to hear my daughter doing at age 9? Singing “I’m not that innocent!”

I may have to declare a fatwa on Barbie. Although Em’s attention span is pretty short, she’s already moving on to “What I Like About You.” The attraction seems to be that they have the lyrics printed up, karaoke style. She really, really like to see lyrics, and to read closed captioning with her movies. Helps her keep up. She’s faithfully transcribing the lyrics from computer onto a sheet of paper.

In other news, there’s a new neighborhood cat that keeps coming around the house, much to our indoor cat’s fascination. At right: Nerys and the night visitor. It looks just like her, except it’s gray. In the low light, it’s tough to tell a difference. “Kill us both, Spock!”

Finger update: swollen and gross. Still tough to type around. I’m not knitting any Jayne hats today, because even if I’m the only one who knows that the yarn would be rubbing up against huge poison ivy blisters, I have too much respect for my Jayne customers to do that to them. Ew. Ew ew ew.

Mr. Tvini works on the tech side in the newspaper business, so he’ll be leaving for work soon so he can spend the evening up there in case anything goes kerflooey. I think at this point, he doesn’t care who wins, as long as it’s a landslide and he can come home early and get to sleep. I’m in agreement, except that I’m a little more definite on whom I want to win. Gobama!

Okay, time to stop agitating my finger. Now there’s a statement you don’t hear every day. Later!

Good morning.

Last night I did a wash and, since it was night, set it to go in the dryer instead of hanging clothes on the line. Mr. Tvini gets up early and gets some clothes out and happens to leave the dryer door open, not thinking anything of it. I wouldn’t have either. The cat, on the other hand, seizes the moment.

Sigh.

You know, in addition to her ear infections, she’s also losing some hair on her back. The vet’s looking into it. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear the cat had deliberately taken the opportunity to spread her fur over the maximum possible number of clean clothes with the least effort. I guess it would be wrong to shut the lid with her in there,eh?

Oh, very well.

I need my energy, so I’ll be taking my daily vitamin. Looks like in 1943, large dose daily vitamins were fairly new. Behold an Oct 1943 ad for One-A-Day vitamins. Made by the makers of Alka Seltzer, the A&D supplement is equal to 1 1/2 teaspoons of cod liver oil. Buy yours today!

Misc. animals

After my comment yesterday about not leaving socks on the floor, this happened. I brought in some hand-knitted socks from the line. I was called away before I had a chance to put them up, so I put them on a plastic bag on a stool and walked off. I heard the bag hit the floor, and sure enough, there was the cat. Caught her red-pawed.

Lot of stamping of boxes, etc., this morning, for Jayne hats and kits. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s not the knitting that slows me down, it’s all the other assorted stuff. Also, I’m almost out of shipping materials, so it’s time to order another gigantic box of boxes. Our house may never be free of clutter.

I did find time to go out and run the Greenway this morning. The rains of last week flooded the stream. It crested over the bridge, and there are still bits of straw and debris stuck through the railings. It’s been a week, and now there’s a wet, rotting smell in places. It’s definitely motivation to keep running – on the way back, at least, to get the heck out of it.

The Office Season 4 releases today, and yes, I will find time to grab a copy. Can’t wait for 30 Rock to come out, too. If I’m knitting Jayne hats in the mornings, it’s nice to have something new to watch. Although I did pull out Bowfinger for the first time in a long time, and it was just as funny as I remembered. Love that movie. I’m baffled that it didn’t do better at the box office. Last night was The Last Emperor, a favorite movie of mine. A Jayne hat bound for Massachusetts came off the needles during that one. It’s a long movie.

Time to eat some lunch and go stamp up some more padded mailers. People need kits!

Final question: the spider at left is living in my rosemary bush. It’s big and it’s pretty, but what is it? Anyone know?

Above: the reason I don’t leave my hand-knitted socks on the floor. (Note: I know yarn is dangerous for cats to eat; that giant ball of wool behind her had just fallen off of a shelf prior to picture-taking.)

Right now Emily is busy writing a book called “Ruby the Copycat.” Hopefully she won’t be sued for copyright infingement.

I’m really proud of her for doing this. I’ve given her some of my Jayne hat pattern cardstock sheets and she’s folded them in half and is planning out her pages. Earlier she said that I could do the pictures while she did the words, then she said she’d prefer the other way around, and now she’s chosen to do it all herself. I can’t wait to see it.

I laid some green wool out on the dining room table, thinking I’d spin it later.

NOT HELPING.

Remember I told you the Mattel knitting machine came with some little powder-blue puffs that someone had made back in 1974?

+ + =

Which, I suppose, is why you don’t give unfelted yarn toys to cats. Heh.

Pre-wardrobe malfunction

February 11th, 2008 2 comments

Last night I came back from the store, and as I came through the back door, I found the yarn in my purse had snagged on the doorknob. This isn’t that unusual. However, this time the yarn was running through the doorjamb, past the closed door. Uh-oh.
Pics and more under cut.
