Strange happening.

I was driving along a side street with my daughter in the car when I saw a man and a woman tumble out of a house on the right side of the road. It looked like they were fighting over something, so I looked at them as I drove up. I couldn’t tell at first whether they were mock-tussling, but as they kept it going, the man looked angry and the woman looked frustrated and she was shouting. He was hunkered down and she was scrambling for whatever it was. Please note: the object in question was not clearly visible, but it was obviously not large enough to be a gun or knife.

My instant read was “he’s physically keeping something from her that she wants, I’m guessing something that actually belongs to her, and the situation has gotten serious enough to tumble out into their front yard.” It just looked like something that could escalate and potentially get ugly.

So like either a good Samaritan or a moron, I stopped the car, got out, and stood by my door. I shouted, “Are you okay?” as they were still fighting. Note to my parents: I was definitely far enough away to jump back in my car and get the heck out of Dodge if he had come toward me.

Her: “NO! I am NOT okay.”
Me: “Would you like me to call someone?”

And at that point, the guy tossed whatever it was high in the air, where it fell upon their driveway hard. The woman dove for it. It was a cell phone. The guy stalked into the garage and she walked off down the street dialing her phone, which miraculously was unbroken. She called, “Thank you! Thank you so much!” to me as she walked, and I said “that’s okay!” and got back in my car and drove away.

I have no clue what all that was about, but I hope the hell she was calling someone to pick her up and get away from whatever drama-laden situation that was. If someone were physically trying to keep my stuff from me, that’d be someone I’d be keeping myself and my stuff far away from.

What I find interesting is that once there was a witness, he knew the jig was up, but he still couldn’t just give her the phone. He had to throw it in the air like it was his choice to let go of it. Passive aggressive, or just plain aggressive, take your pick. Very “fine, I didn’t want it anyway.” I’d say “real mature” but it’s not like they were using Lincoln-Douglas debate rules anyway.

Of course, there were several stores within easy walking distance. I don’t know if there was specific information on the phone that she needed, but if there wasn’t, the woman could just have gone around the corner and asked to use the phone and gotten the heck out of that situation. Circumvent the whole problem.

Of course, as I say, I have no clue what it was all about. I’m pretty sure I don’t want to, either.

My daughter’s take on the two of them spinning and grappling out in the yard?

“The woman is going back inside to take care of her little boy.”
Me: “That was her little boy?” (note – he was a good sized guy with a beard)
“Yes. And she’s the mommy.”
(Later)
“They were dancing. They like to dance.”

I’m glad my daughter has never been exposed to a situation like that, so that it could never occur to her that two grown people would be yelling and fighting with each other like that. I’m also counting my blessings that I was never exposed to that as a kid either, so it would never occur to me to tolerate it now.

We should all be so lucky.

    my take on the situation:

she was cheating on him, or doing something that could be misinterpreted as cheating; he suspected it and threatened to look through her recent dials.

Sure, the jig was over once a witness was present, but he made his point by her reaction to him holding her phone. Throwing the phone was his way of saying “i know”.

    just my take anyway.

Interesting! That never occurred to me, but then I’ve never been in a relationship (that I know of) where someone was cheating.

You know, actually that’s not true, I went out with a guy who moved across the country who was cheating, but it wasn’t exactly unexpected. He was an unreliable flake, and he was across the country. I knew it was gonna happen. I guess it’s more accurate to say that I never was in a relationship where I couldn’t just ask the person outright what was going on and expect an honest answer. I like my relationships drama-free.

Anyway, all I could go by is what I saw, and it didn’t look good. I could care less about their individual backstory, I could only work with that two minute window that I happened to be there.

Hopefully they got their respective acts together. I doubt it, but I still hope!

I followed your link from Jezebel. Speculating that the woman was cheating and that the guy was checking up on her, frankly, is siding with a more-than-likely abuser. I’m amazed that someone would speculate based on no evidence that this woman was cheating on him—how come people never speculate that the guy was cheating on her?

In a fight with an ex, the first thing he did was try and take the phone away from me so I couldn’t dial for help.

    Exactly.

    You are probably correct.

Do you have a way for getting rid of the humans who can’t see it your way?

Use your brain and scope of thought to solve that one.
