Ugh.

The more I investigate sole propietorship, registering under an assumed name, SE tax, county licenses, etc., the more I come to come to one inescapable conclusion:

Jesus Christ, this shit is complicated.

It really can be. I wish I knew more about NC law, since my boss does incorporations and shit like that, but FL law’s gonna be different. Dang. If you can find a professional paralegal in your area, I think they can do that sort of thing for a lot cheaper than it’d cost to get an attorney to help you out.

You may wish to investigate LLCs. I forget the difference– maybe you don’t pay a fee every year for SPs, but it’s more complicated elsewhere? I can’t remember. (I used to help with some business startups when I was a quasi-paralegal, but I don’t remember much.)

Yes, go see a lawyer or paralegal. Ask if they have a “first hour free” arrangement or some such so you can figure out if the person is helpful and will give you what you need.

I wonder if you could find anyone else in the knitting community who has done something similar? Between yarn sellers on eBay and other people who knit for fun and profit, I’m sure there are others.
