Jeopardy!

Had a good time last night at a party for my dad’s housemate, Ellyn. She was on Jeopardy last night, and came *this* close to winning, as she was ahead going into final Jeopardy. Unfortunately, although they apparently stopped tape for five minutes to debate whether her answer was right, they elected not to give it to her, and so she didn’t win. It was an issue of semantics as to whether “Ode to Joy” was an acceptable term for the entire Beethoven’s Ninth. The question was something along the lines of “This Beethoven sympthony contains the line, “Alle Menschen werden BrĂ¼der.” I probably don’t have the question exactly right. I believe she’s going to appeal.

This link probably won’t be accurate after tomorrow, but you can see Ellyn here.

Ellyn was on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” in 2001 and won 32 grand, a good portion of which she donated to charity. She’s very active on various message boards which discuss ways to get on the shows, and strategies for doing well. Interesting and nice person!

Ooh. I’d love to get more tips, as I just passed the Jeopardy qualifying test a few months ago and am (hopefully) in the pool!

I think I might agree with the show on this one, however. They asked for the symphony, and the entire symphony itself is referred to as the Ninth or occasionally as the Choral Symphony, but never as “Ode to Joy,” as opposed to, say, Mahler’s 8th, the “Symphony of a Thousand” or Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphonies. (I think there were more than one– my street cred as a music historian is pretty flat here :P)

    Still, stinks that she lost.

I think the show is right, unfortunately. “Ode to Joy” is what you’d call the fourth movement of the symphony, but not the entire symphony itself.

Sucks that your friend lost, then, but it’s still pretty awesome that she got on the show and did so well as to get that far in it.
