Vaeldriil’s hat

Vaeldriil‘s baby’s hat and booties have arrived, and so now I may share picture.

Here they be. The yarn is 70% angora, 30% lambswool, so it’s pretty darned soft and fuzzy.

And here be the pattern for the hat, by yours truly, if anybody wants to give it a go. It is thoughtfully placed behind a cut since most of you either saw it in the knitting community or don’t give a rat’s ass about knitting.

Copyright me, blah blah, don’t use it for profit without askin’ me first, please – especially because I may offer these for sale on my site at http://www.wearwithstyle.com if Vaeldriil doesn’t mind having her baby be a trendsetter.

Again, here’s a picture of the hat. As a side note, I have found that many space-dyed “kid” yarns, such as Angel and Noro Lily Multi, will pool very nicely when knitted in a hat with 64 stitches cast on #7’s or 72 stitches cast on #6’s. Here’s a hat which took less than one skein of Noro Lily on #7’s as an example. So by all means, go for something less expensive than the Angel if that floats yer boat!

Materials:
1 and 1/3 skein Lorna’s Laces Angel (70% angora, 30% lambswool)
one #6 16″ circular needle
one set #6 double pointed needles

CO 72 stitches on circular needle. I use a cable cast-on for a slightly more elastic edge than the long-tail, but do whatever you’re comfortable with.

Place marker and begin knitting in the round for five inches from cast-on edge.
Then work the following decrease rows, switching to double-pointed needles when the work is too tight to keep it on the circular:
Row 1: *knit 7, k2tog* over entire row.
Row 2: *knit 6, k2tog* over entire row.
Row 3: *knit 5, k2tog* over entire row.
Keep decreasing every row in this manner until you have 16 stitches left. Then you’ll switch, because you want to get down to a number divisible by three so we can make the three little points. (Keep it at 16 stitches and make four points if it floats your boat, I just didn’t have enough yarn left to make four points.)

Once you’re at 16 stitches, *knit 2, k2tog* over entire row. You should have 12 stitches remaining.

Arrange 12 stitches over 3 double-pointed needles – in other words, put four stitches on each needle.

Work i-cord (instructions) on first set of four stitches for about one inch. Break yarn. Repeat with other two sets of four stitches.

You probably have a big gaping hole in the top of your hat between the sets of i-cord. Thread some leftover yarn on a yarn needle and, from the inside of the hat, stitch up the opening and pull it together. It doesn’t have to be pretty; it won’t show.

Thread the loose ends of yarn at the ends of the i-cord back down through the i-cord to hide them. Weave in all ends.

Voila! Hat!
