“Manic Panic” Panic

My daughter would like to put two green streaks in her hair. Me being the permissive liberal type, I say “why the heck not?” I’ve settled on Manic Panic semi-permanent dye so it’ll last for a while but it she won’t have to live with it too long, and it could in theory be gone by the time school starts. Em’s chosen color: Green Envy.

However, I have absolutely no experience with hair dyeing. Yarn dyeing, yes, but I don’t think I can dunk my daughter’s head into a crockpot for a few hours.

Does anyone have any advice? Any links on the web that you think are particularly helpful? Anyone in Charlotte who can recommend good sources, or who might be willing to try to help us? I’d rather my daughter not come out of this looking like Sigmund the Sea Monster.

Little help?

ETA: Her hair has lightened a little this summer to a light brown. We would rather not bleach before adding color, as that creates a bigger problem come Fall.

ETA-again: I misspoke. Her chosen color is “Electric Lizard.”

I’ve used manic panic a few times, and while it’s really easy to use, the dye doesn’t really take to hair that isn’t porous. Which means you have to bleach the hell out of it. They make a lightener called ‘flash lightening’. It’s what I used to use and works really well. I saw someone use it on their naturally very blonde hair once without bleaching, and, well… it didn’t look so hot.

It fades extremely quickly, and I mean extremely. We are talking a matter of days before it is a faded pukey resemblance of the colour it’s supposed to be. I have read about people adding some to their shampoo to make it last longer, but that won’t fly if you just have 2 streaks. Washing in cold water once a week would probably get you 3 weeks of nice looking green, but I can’t see that working for your daughter.

THEN AGAIN, since you’re only doing 2 streaks you could easily reapply the dye whenever it starts to fade.

Oh yeah, I wanted to mention, if putting 2 very permanent lemon-juice yellow streaks into your daughter’s hair to make it work bothers you, your only option is going to be the kind you paint in, y’know? Then you can wash out and reapply as em feels like having it in.

I think there should be instructions on the label. I’ve helped friends dye their hair but they’ve all had dark hair so I’ve had to first bleach out the natural color and then apply the dye.

The real trick is washing it out and making sure to not do it in the shower or part of a regular bath because it will stain your skin, her skin, the porcelain and towels…

So maybe you want to take this jar and her into a salon and ask them to help? Sometimes beauty cosmetology schools will offer discounted rates, so that might be another option to think about.

    Good luck!

    This, too:

Many people write to me and ask about suggestions on how to do streaking or multi-colors of MANIC PANICĀ® Hair Color. In both situations, you absolutely must isolate your hair. When streaking, make sure you either wrap the hair you want to color with plastic wrap or foil, and rinse the color out CAREFULLY … making sure the colored hair doesn’t touch your other hair.

Thank you! I had already decided that bleaching first won’t work for her, since I don’t want her having the Bride of Frankenstein look this fall. Her hair has lightened up some this summer, so that’ll help us, but it’s definitely not blonde.

I’m going to amend the entry to note that we can’t bleach her hair. Good point.

I think without being able to bleach I would go the manic panic diehard route

You can do a small strip test underneith her hair and see how it turns out though. Green envy is a darker colour…. you could just get a pretty dark green. You probably want to leave it in for a few hours tho.

    From Lynda

I’ll ask my hairdresser tonight but I think with dark hair it is either bleach first or paint it on for a daily effect only.
