They’re coming to get you, Barbara…

Several weeks ago we noticed that our wireless connection was flaky. My husband realized that it was our cordless phone which was causing the problems. The further away we are from the laptops with the phone, the better the connection. So if it’s something mission critical that we’re working on, we may not answer the phone, for which I apologize in advance.

A few days ago, we noticed that the connection was still iffy, even when the phone wasn’t in use. Then my husband heard the *ding!* of the microwave finishing, and presto, our connection was fine again. So now the microwave is also hosing the wireless.

Yesterday I noticed that the phone reception got very crackly when the microwave was on, but cleared right up as soon as the timer dinged. So the microwave is ALSO hosing the phone.

What the heck? It’s like all the appliances in our house are conspiring to keep us off the internet. Are the robots finally rebelling? Should I be arming myself, or can I get by with a new microwave? Yeesh.

They’re all on 2.6 GHz. You’d think they might have figured this out before making all appliances run on this frequency.

You may be able to adjust what frequency your phone and/or wireless hub are working on.

I can’t give specific directions, but I’ve had both phones and wireless hubs which have allowed me to do this in the past. (I think.)

Upgrade your phone to a 5.8 ghz – that will take care of a good part of your problem. I had a lot of the same issues in my apartment until I did that.

    Although….

If your microwave or any other appliance/electronic device is causing issues when they’re in operation this could just be electronic interference – bad shielding on the wires is the most likely culprit. The most expensive electronic doodad in the world can be the worst interference-causing device because it just has to be safe for you to be around, not your other electronic gizmos.

They have small devices you can buy which allow you to check for ‘hot spots’ – Electromagnetic Field Detectors – ghost hunters use them to help find strong electronic currents that may be explained by the otherworldly – or where devices and power lines may be giving off enough juice to fry your brain cells and of course, interefere with your more sensitive devices. If you find a spot that is giving off a particularly high amount (and your confident it isn’t Casper stopping buy for a latte), you can always replace the cord with a shielded one or purchase tubing or film that you can place around the cord to cut down on the problem.
