Emily and related fun stuff

Had a great day yesterday. We went uptown to meet with my Brownie co-leader and pick up cookie badges for distribution. We parked at Discovery Place and then took the bus/shuttle out to meet the co-leader, then took it back to Discovery Place. (I was going to link to Discovery Place, but their site appears to have been hacked. Whoops.) We’re members, so we went on in and enjoyed a puppet show and rat basketball. I had a momentary confrontation with the leader of a sizable youth group who inadvertently cut in front of us in line for the puppet show. Don’t get between my child and a puppet show – you’re poking the mama bear!

It all worked out. We had a great time. On the way home, we stopped by Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find, where Emily shocked me by actually wanting to pick up a comic book! She decided this in the car before we even went in. She picked out a Betty and Veronica. I was so excited that I bought it without looking at it too closely. I checked it out later, and let me tell you, it is HORRIBLE. I mean, I remembered that Betty was nice and Veronica was mean, rich, and vain, but I didn’t remember just how much they fought over boys and emphasized looks and clothes. My GOD! I think my Women’s Studies certificate spontaneously combusted when I bought that thing. Well, lesson learned.

Later in the evening we went over to my father’s place, where my mom and daughter and I went swimming in his condo’s pool. He brought bottled water and enjoyed watching us cavort. My daughter, aka Little Mussolini, kept insisting that Grandma go underwater. Why this was hilarious, I don’t know, but it was. A good time was had by all. After Mom got out, Emily and I had this interesting exchange, I think prompted by her playing The Sims 2, a computer game where people are born, go through various stages of life, and then die.

Her: What if Grandma died?
Me: I would be very, very sad.
Her: I still need Grandma.
Me: I do too.

Morbid, but pretty natural. Also, AWWWWWWWW!

Steve is out helping a friend fix a shed today, in preparation for their selling the property. Another geek friend is also coming over. It’s like the computer guru version of a barn raising. The shed may not be fixed when they’re done, but I’ll bet it’ll be wired for ethernet.

In the meantime, I suggested to Emily that we make lemonade, and she was very enthusiastic. We went shopping for lemons and sugar. Afteward, we stopped by Bruegger’s bagels, where they still have some red white and blue patriotic bagels leftover from Independence Day. Yum! I guess.

The lack of hair on the doll was driving Emily crazy, so when Charlotte Knitting Guild member Jane Prater came up with some yellowish cotton chenille, Emily decided it was close enough and we went for it. However, I’m still going to need some from a swap. I don’t know what brand this is, but poor Elizabeth’s friend has split ends from all the shedding (pictured right). This may do for now, but I’m going to have to replace the hair at some point, possibly soon. Also, I made a YouTube video on how to do the hair, but haven’t had time to put it up yet. I still have to finish this doll’s sleeves and seam up her sweater before Emily’s head explodes.

I’m off to make lemonade and knit like the wind!

To be fair, the boys in those comics spend a lot of time thinking/arguing/fighting over cars, money and girls (and, if you’re jughead, food).

It paints an disappointing picture of teenagers of both sexes.

Good point. Archie doesn’t come off too well in that first panel either.
