Musical goodness.

“Call Me Madam” was very good and may go into my DVD collection soon.

For those of you who love musicals – all two or so of you – which ones do you own? Which ones would you like to? Which songs do you put on in the background and dance or sing to while you’re going about your life?

Lord help me, but Xanadu and The Pirate Movie are two of my faves. I know they aren’t what you had in mind when you asked this question, but there you go.

I don’t know that I *love* musicals, but there are some I enjoy. I can’t explain it, really, since the idea of stopping the story to sing often bugs me, but sometimes, it doesn’t matter. (This is why I like “Once More With Feeling,” though — because the story never stops.) But that’s just me.

I like 7 Brides for 7 Brothers. There’s one that I really don’t understand. The idea of kidnapping the women and trapping them all winter should infuriate me. But I like the singing and dancing!

    The Sound of Music

The Court Jester (NEED this on DVD!)

    Holiday Inn

According to IMDB, The Nightmare Before Christmas counts as a musical, and that’s on my list too.

I HATE Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I get it – I just hate it. But I do understand why you like it. As for me, my all time fave is The Music Man, I think.

I’ve got Court Jester on DVD, but really should get Holiday Inn. It’s been forever since I’ve seen the Pirate Movie, maybe I should put that one on the ole Netflix list. And I don’t even remember Xanadu – I don’t think I ever saw it the whole way through. Maybe I should rectify that, just so I can say I’ve seen it.

Being married to a guy with a master’s in film means I’ve seen a lot of movies I would probably never have watched… but musiscals are not on his list. He only owns a couple of very strange, animated 80’s rock “musicals” (which he has “made” me watch). There are some I’ve sat through just to say that yes, I’ve seen them (Citizen Kane is one I’ll never watch again, but there are some that I actually enjoyed).

I don’t own most of the movies I listed, but wouldn’t mind having more of them. I do have The Pirate Movie (have the soundtrack on vinyl, too), because it’s on my all-time fave list (right up there with Buckaroo Banzai and Logan’s Run). Probably b/c I wasn’t allowed to see movies in high school (not family rules – school rules), and it was the first one I drove myself to (Jr. year?). And I *loved* Christopher Atkins.

I won’t buy 7 Brides… just out of principle. A hate the “Sobbin’ Women” song (supposed to be Sabine, right?). But if it came on cable, I’d watch it.

John needs to see Court Jester. The “vessel with the pestle” (or a variation) comes up a lot on MST3k and I laugh and he looks at me funny. He’s usually laughing at the obscure stuff and I’m looking confused. Danny Kaye rules!

I am not into musicals as a rule, but my favorite movie of all time happens to be a musical, My Fair Lady. It was one of the first movies I bought on DVD since I wore out my VHS copy watching it constantly! I also have the soundtrack on my iPod and I usually listen to it when I’m cleaning the house!

I’m not a big fan of musicals in movie format, though I do like the “traditional” favorites, like the Sound of Music. I much prefer live performances, and soundtracks. My best friend and I have been going to the Broadway by the Bay series here in SF for the last couple years. This year, we’ll be seeing 7 Brides…, Fiddler on the Roof, and Miss Saigon.

My favorite still, after all these years, is Les Miserables, and I have both the London and LA casts on CD, and listen to both frequently.

I own evita (love it!), rocky horror (how could you not love it!), and sound of music (because it’s a classic!). I want to own the phantom of the opera.

Okay .. now I get to see just how many of them I can remember. Now, these are the ones I own, not just the ones I love. That list would be a whole lot longer. This one is embarassing enough as it is. ::laughing:: I’ll probably get home and go look at the shelf just to see what I may have forgotten.

    Singing in the Rain
    Royal Wedding
    Mama Wore Tights
    South Pacific
    Sound of Music
    The King and I
    The Music Man
    Fiddler on the Roof
    In the Good Ol Summertime
    Meet Me in St. Louis
    Wizard of Oz
    The Court Jester
    Mary Poppins
    Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
    Hans Christian Anderson
    Chorus Line
    Pippin
    Chicago
    Labarinth
    My Sister Eileen
    Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
    On The Town
    West Side Story
    Finnian’s Rainbow
    Oklahoma

Yeah .. I know I’m forgetting some of them.

Now on my wish list still is:
    An American in Paris
    GiGi
    The Gay Divorce’
    The Hugh Jackman PBS Oklahoma
The HBO taping of Camelot (found a guy online who has a good copy!)
    Three Little Words
    Showboat
    Kismet
    Kiss Me Kate
    Blue Hawaii
    GI Blues

… the wish list is longer than that as well. But those that come to mind quickly. I admit it … I love musicals.

Now what do I sing and dance to musical wise? The Broadway recording of Chess. ::purrs:: I would sooooo love it if they would make a movie of that one.

Being two theatre majors, we love musicals, but really don’t own as many as we’d like. So I’ll just mention favorites: Phantom of the Opera (I loved the recent movie, and that’s a soundtrack I’ll pop on while I’m driving), Evita, Sound of Music, Singin’ in the Rain (desperately need that on DVD), Bride and Prejudice of course. I really want that soundtrack for bopping around the house.

But I’m a Broadway junkie: I’ll listen to a lot of soundtracks from the stage. 1776, The Secret Garden (the most gorgeous song ever is “Lily’s Eyes,” which is a duet between Mandy Patinkin and Robert Westenberg. Turns me to goo every time.), Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, Chess (the London version, NOT the crappy Broadway one), Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, and a bunch of other stuff I can’t think of off the top of my head.

When I was in college, my buddy Will and I figured out that the Complete Symphonic recording of Les Miserables was almost exactly the length of our drive from school to home. So we’d stick it in when we hit the highway and would sing all the parts all the way home. Except Cosette, I had no prayer of singing her.

I hadn’t thought about Bride and Prejudice, which is odd since I just saw it.

Sadly, I can no longer listen to Phantom of the Opera. I had a college roommate who played it CONSTANTLY for pretty much the entire year. Well, she alternated that and Cats. We all had our quirks, though. I got my revenge by playing old Carter Family recordings, and apparently I nearly ruined Ella Fitzgerald for our third roommate.

I need Singin’ in the Rain on DVD too! For a Donald O’Connor fan, it’s a must!

    The Broadway recording of Chess

Ha! I just posted my comment below and said that I can’t stand the Broadway one, and much prefer the London recording (the black and white cover, as opposed to the one with the flags). Then I saw your comment and giggled. 🙂 Whichever version, I LOVE that show, and I’d love to see a movie too. Probably too dated, though. Dang.

Love Donald O’Connor. And Gene Kelly. We wore out a VHS tape of that movie and just haven’t gotten around to getting it on DVD yet.

I count B&P because I’ve been known to dance around the kitchen and sing “No Life Without Wife.”

Ugh. Cats. Never saw it, never will.

Oh, GOD. Now *I* can’t do Elvis musicals. I worked an ice show that had an Elvis number. When you’ve heard “Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love” 550+ times in six months, you avoid Elvis as much as possible in the future. 🙂

::grins:: Actually, it is the London Recording. Its just been my experience that most people look at me like I’ve grown a second head when I say London recording of such n such. If I say Broadway then they know I’m talking about a live show rather than a film.

    My favorites:
    – Les Mis
    – Godspell
    – Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
    – Chicago
    – Hello Dolly
    – Sound of Music
    – The King and I
    – Fiddler on the Roof
    – O Brother Where Art Thou
    – Moulin Rouge
    – Once More With Feeling (had to put that in there)

I’m with you on not liking Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (though David’s brothers – predictably – think it’s hilarious). I also hate West Side Story with the fire of a thousand suns.

I’ll be kind and just list some highlights, otherwise you’d have no room left in your comments. 😀

Holiday Inn – I have killed my tape and need to find it on DVD

Bye Bye Birdie – Perhaps the best “clean the house” movie ever. Another that I have killed my tape of and need to replace, but thank god for soundtracks on cd.

Duets – Not sure this falls fully into the category of musical, but it’s got lots of music sung by the cast, so there ya go.

Moulin Rouge – Another I have not gotten on DVD and I managed to kill both my VHS and my CD soundtrack.

Bride and Prejudice – I don’t own, I MUST own soon. Who doesn’t want to watch Naveen Andrews dance and sing, hm?

I love just about any old black and white musical. Holiday Inn is the only one I was able to pry out of my parents’ hands when I left home and I don’t tend to buy movies for myself much, so I don’t have a lot. I need to get on it and buy some DVDs.

I passionately HATE Sound of Music. There are highlights that are tolerable and I do like “Sixteen Going On Seventeen”, but if I hear one more rendition of “The Things That I Like” I might throw up, seriously. I haven’t seen Seven Brides for Seven Brothers since I was 16, so I might need to go back and watch that one again to get a real idea of how I like it. I love that broadway musicals are being made into movies, so I’m happy to pay for tickets to all of them just to keep them coming.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Sound of Music. LOVE. IT. Julie Andrews is my hero. Loves me the Mary Poppins, too.

I love My Fair Lady. I like to sing “On The Street Where You Live” a lot. (I can remember the words :P)

I always watch Gigi when it’s on TCM, though it’s secondary to MFL.

I love the soundtrack to The Music Man; we did that in high school.

I think I go with the performer or song, really. I like lots of cheesy songs from Oklahoma. The original Peter Pan is one of my very favorites, though “Ugg-A-Wugg” is really not appropriate, and that saddens me because it’s too good of a song to not be able to sing or play because it’s racist :P)

OOH! How could I forget? Singin’ in the Rain is a GREAT movie. Great, great, great.
