Life’s Little Victories Part Two

August 5th, 2008 26 comments

A couple of weeks ago I had to spend the morning in line at the auto registration office and pay an ungodly fine for getting my car inspected late a couple of years ago.

Was the morning a total loss? Of course not. If I was going to put that much time in queueing up to pay fines, by cracky I was going to turn it into a positive experience. Check out what arrived in the mail today.

blue Fleece Artist swatch

August 3rd, 2008 2 comments

Swatch for Twisted Sisters’ “Eve” scarf. Swatch knitted on size 6 needle in Fleece Artist Woolie Silk 2ply. I’m getting proper gauge, 6 stitches and 8 rows to one inch, but it feels loose. You don’t want it to be tight if you’re going to be doing cables, but still. I may go down to a size 5 needle.

ETA: Correction. I checked again, and I was using a #5. I’m sorry, but I have a psychological barrier to knitting a gigantic scarf on size 4’s, so I’m sticking with the 5.

Wiiiiii – Junior!

August 2nd, 2008 2 comments

Em is fascinated with miis, which are the little characters on our Wii. When we run using the Wii Fit, she gets very excited to see which mii we’ll pass next. When I was done running today, she decided to take a turn on the Island Lap so she could see which miis came up. I’d be hard pressed to get her to run long distance outside without complaint (especially in our 90F heat), but she really enjoyed this.

Disclaimers: If I’d known we were going to be doing videos, I would have vacuumed. And picked up things. And bought a new couch. Also, my overenthusiasm is meant to encourage her to keep exercising; I don’t always sound like I’m hopped up on the happy juice.

Thanks again, Dad!

New rule:

August 1st, 2008 No comments

No Couch to 5K if it’s more than 80 degrees outside. I could tell my body wasn’t working as hard (good, it means I’m getting more fit) but there were rivers of sweat pouring off of me. I kid my husband that when he comes in from one of his 30 mile bike rides, he smells like the ocean. Today I smell like the ocean. Yipes!

Maybe I’ll move up a week on couch to 5k – in Autumn, when it’s not like a cross-country race on Mercury.

glass contents: 50% liquid, 50% air.

Good: Down a little more in weight.
Bad: Red blotches still there.

Good: Almost done with June Jayne hats.
Bad: GOING CRAZY FROM KNITTING JAYNE HATS.

Good: About to go to sleep.
Bad: Being up this late in the first place.

My natural optimism will carry the day – it’s been a good one, and I know tomorrow will be even better, because:

Good: Em has a morning camp tomorrow. Yay!

Night, y’all!

Swell.

So now apparently when I have a real good bawl, my eyes get red spots all around them, as if a thousand tiny gigolos had given me a thousand tiny hickeys.

It’s been about 16 hours. The puffiness has gone down, and the spots have faded some, but not completely, as you can see. Stupid rosacea. This better not be permanent.

From now on, if any of you see me looking like I might cry, you are required to break into spontaneous dance in order to prevent this from happening. Ugh.

(And yes, spots aside, I’m fine now, thanks.)

An elephant was drinking from a river one day, when he spotted a turtle asleep on a log. So, he ambled on over and kicked it clear across the river.

“What did you do that for?” asked a passing giraffe.

“Because I recognized it as the same turtle that took a nip out of my trunk 53 years ago.”

“Wow, what a memory,” commented the giraffe.

“Yes,” said the elephant, “I have turtle recall.”

Thank you! Thank you! Remember, you can’t throw rotten fruit through the internet.

Wii fit day 26

July 28th, 2008 8 comments

Internal dialogue coming back from post office late today:

“Man, I am wiped. And hungry. I want something bad for me. I’ve been so good. I should just get some orange chicken from Panda Express. It won’t kill me. I’m tired, I’m allowed. No, we’ve got food at home, and payday is on Friday, and we’re working so hard on bills and fitness… okay. I don’t need that chicken. For that matter, I didn’t need that mocha today, but oh well. But I’m tired, I’m just going to go home and weigh in, and if I’m up, I’m up. Whatever.”

Woot! Five pounds down since starting!

Only 40 to go. Okay, let’s not think about that. Five pounds down! Yay! I’m sure a plateau is approaching, as it’s very difficult to find time to go out and run in the summer watching Em, but I’ve got her going to a kid’s “Little Gym” type place on Friday morning, so that’ll help.

Running with the wii fit is tough on my calves. However, it’s also fun, now that we’ve discovered some Easter eggs in the routes. When a dog passes you at the beginning, quickly overtake your guide and start following the dog to unlock new routes – that sort of thing.

For those wondering what the peak in the middle was, this may be TMI, but here you go. Hey, I ain’t perfect.
