Paging Dr. Frankenstein…
Anybody here every reconstructed a Barbie or other hollow plastic figure? I’m looking at a little project.
Don’t worry about me, I’ll be just fine…

Me: I think I’ll make some hot cocoa and suck it through a TimTam.
Mr. Tvini: That’s going to be your new catchphrase, isn’t it? “Oh yeah? Well, suck THAT through a TimTam!”
In other news, I searched for my copy of Castle Waiting and couldn’t find it. It’s one of the few comics that I really cherish, so I went looking for it online. And lo and behold, in May, a hardback edition is coming out! All the Castle Waiting up until this point, collected in one volume! SQUEEEEEEEE!!! I can’t wait!
It’s a beautifully illustrated graphic novel, the winner of many industry prizes, suitable for older kids on up. Linda Medley does a fantastic job with it. I am so incredibly psyched! I want it NOW!
Jayne hats this weekend: working on orders from 1/10-1/11.
The best kind of lift you can get is the lift from doing something fun that you know will make someone else’s day a little brighter. And so, I’m feeling very good because one of my friends, who deserves only nice and kind and wonderful things in her life, received a care package and enjoyed it.
But hey, you know me. I gotta go over the top.
So last week I swapped some sock yarn for a DVD of Oklahoma for her and Lawrence of Arabia for me. Best kind of care package: cheap! Add in some goodies from LUSH, some chocolate, and a note from Hugh saying how much he enjoyed their wonderful time together. Carefully avoid mention of Hot Monkey Sex because her kids might read it.
Add in a photoshopped pic…

…and voila! Girly goodness!
Also, if you get tired of Hugh, send his phone number my way, okay?
Today’s new words for my daughter: “noon” and “cannibal.”
She’d been doing really well in math for a while, but had been having trouble the latter part of this year. That’s odd, because really, she was definitely ahead of her age level before. We discovered at a meeting last week that her daily special ed time (she goes out of the classroom for help working on her goals for a short time every day) is during math. So when she gets homework, like she did today, with new concepts like “noon” then it may not be her complaining because she doesn’t want to do homework, it may honestly be something she doesn’t know. She certainly seemed like it was new to her.
It’s frustrating. While we work on things like following directions, listening, elaborating on stories, etc., she’s apparently missing out on other parts of school. Thank goodness she’s smart to begin with. We’ll just have to double up on how much math we introduce into her daily life.
Lest this be too much of a downer, “cannibal” was introduced because we were playing, and she was pretending to bite my nose off. This after an evening of pretending we were snakes and that her stuffed animals were mice to be chased around the bed and devoured. That’s my little weirdo!
Saw this bird in a not-very-tall tree just outside our house this afternoon. I’ve never seen a bird of prey with that coloring before. I have no clue what it is. Anyone?

Odessa is pretty much done, except that it’s a touch on the small side.

It fits the glass head and Sadie all right, although it feels snug and almost short on me. I’m trying to decide whether that means that my head models are off, or whether it means that it’ll fit a hairless head properly. It was done on #4’s instead of #6’s, so the rows are a little shorter. I knitted the proper length for the body, but I’m wondering if I would have added some extra straight rows among the decreases to make up for the shorter stitches there. So if I’m going to rip back, now’s the time, before I bind off, when it’s still easy to undo.
As far as cosmetic flaws, five rows from the top, I picked up an extra stitch or two. Also, I’m not entirely happy with my (sl1, k2tog, psso) stitches, which you can’t really see from this angle. They feel a little sloppier, and now that I’ve gotten the ssk’s nice and even, I can’t help but feel there’s a better way for those as well. Maybe if I k2togtbl instead of just a straight k2tog. Hmm. To rip back or not to rip back. Normally I’d say it’s one of those “nobody but me will notice” things and then just decide whether I can live with it, but if it’s going to be too short, it’s not a gift I want to give. Hm. What to do, what to do…
Cat story from my husband:
“When I was at UNCC, I was living on the third floor of our building with some friends. Whenever I let Purr-Zha out, he wouldn’t go downstairs to the outdoors like you’d expect. He’d go one floor upstairs and make a beeline for the Cipriani twins’ bedroom and lie on their bed. I swear I didn’t train him to do that. Good boy.”
I took Purr-Zha back to the vet’s office this morning, after he sneezed and blew thick ropes of saliva all over himself. They did a full body X-ray, and even I could see the large spots on his lungs that meant cancer. He’s down to six pounds, for a loss of a pound and a half over the last five months. He’s just had so many health problems that any one of them could have explained his weight loss and lethargy. I don’t blame anyone for not making this diagnosis sooner.
For the moment, he’s okay, but it’s a matter of days. After talking with the vet about what he could expect as far as the quality of his death at home versus being put to sleep at the vet’s, we’ve decided to go ahead and end his life at the vet’s. They asked us to check in on Monday and let them know what we wanted to do. So we’re spending some quality time with him here, and unless something dramatic happens one way or the other, we’ll be bringing him in early next week.
He’d been on prescription diet, but the vet gave him some commercial cat food, which he ate well. He also got fluids under the skin and some prednisone and such to help him feel better. It did help, as he managed to jump onto the couch and go to sleep. The fact that the prednisone helped him makes me wonder if maybe he isn’t arthritic as well.
We’ve been told we can stop the thyroid medication, since he has an empty stomach so much of the time and is probably upsetting his stomach more. I’m off to the grocery store to get him some cat comfort food. Needless to say, he’s also getting some major loving. If nothing else, this will be a nice last weekend for him.
