Struck By Lightning

May 21st, 2008 16 comments

Still knocked out by allergies or whatever. Yesterday I didn’t take Benadryl until evening, as it’s not really fair to Em for me to be out of commission for the whole day. Of course, pushing her on the swing outside isn’t exactly the best thing, but again, you do what you gotta. If it were just one day, then I think I could get away with keeping her cooped up inside, but it’s not, and she’s working hard on the EOG (end of grade) tests at her school, so she deserves a good time.

The Benadryl is giving me weird dreams. A couple of days ago as I drifted off, I had what I thought was a great idea. It’d be marketable, I could make it without too much trouble, and it’d be inexpensive to produce. I decided I was so sleepy I didn’t want to get up to write it down, but how could I possibly forget what it was?

Needless to say, I forgot. Of course, as hopped up as I was, it could have been an automatic carrot launcher or something. Who knows?

Last night I dreamed that someone was over and spending the night. She was going to share my bed, but in the morning I discovered that my cat had fleas and I was worried about her and the house. Then I was joking around with the cleaning crew that had mysteriously showed up. I’m fairly sure this is because a) I saw an episode of Dead Like Me where two co-workers had to bunk together, and b) I haven’t been able to clean at all over the last couple of days and the house is in a bad state and it’s depressing.

I’m about to send out mail canceling Brownies today. I’m no good to anyone like this.

Today’s Emily art was done last night. We had a big storm come through here with thunder and lightning. I love the unhappy expression and “oh no” of the figure at left, but I also love the bug eyes and crazy hair of the lightning victim on the right. Even more, I love that she spelled “lightning” right for this context, which is more than 75% of the internet can do.

Okay, time for another exciting day of lying on the couch watching Voyager reruns and trying to breathe.

Show of hands?

Okay, at this point, everybody I owe a package to should have one – except Bubba. Sorry, Bubba, bear with me.

Anybody out there still waiting for a swap package from me?

More art

That benadryl knocked me out yesterday. I got Em and we went home and I was in bed by 3. I got up for a while around 8, but I was still pretty sleepy.

I haven’t taken any yet today. I need to do things like pay bills and get groceries and didn’t want to be completely out of commission.

I’m still stopped up, but not quite as badly. I was running a fever of about 99.5 yesterday, so maybe it was a cold. Or maybe my system’s just in full freakout mode from lack of oxygen. Well, whatever, hopefully tomorrow things will be better.

Today’s Emily art: ” Jamie Is Talking To The Sun.” I think the object at left is a house, not a rocket ship. Or maybe it’s both, I didn’t ask. Emily sometimes tells me she wants to be the first person to go to the sun, so maybe that’s how she’ll get there.

My yarn from yesterday’s dyeing session is still drying, so I can’t show it yet. Instead, here’s some art from Emily. I think I’m going to start showing more of her art. As her mother, this no doubt interests me more than you, but that’s why God gave us index fingers – to be able to click past such things. Of course, you can always use that same ability to click for a larger picture. Just sayin’.

This picture cracks me up because of the shocked looks of the mother and father compared with giggly expression of the girl on the right, who is probably a big sister. Em gets pretty expressive, considering she mainly makes stick figures using ball point pen as her medium.

As for me, I’m about to take some Benadryl, lie down, and wonder if it’s possible to die of pollen.

Chicken Satay Singapore Style

May 18th, 2008 No comments

The reason my fingers were kind of yellow in the picture in the previous post is because we’d been cooking something with turmeric in it. This is an absolutely delicious chicken recipe that we had at a friend’s house in 1998. The recipe doesn’t say to use strips, but we think you’re probably supposed to (what with “satay” in the title of the recipe). This went well with asparagus last night. I lost track of the rice and burned it, but obviously that would go well too.

Chicken Satay Singapore Style

3T peanut oil
1T soy sauce
1t honey
3 cloves garlic, minced
1T minced peeled fresh ginger
1T curry powder
1t ground coriander
1t ground turmeric
1t ground cumin
1 small dried chili, finely crumbled (can substitute red pepper flakes)
salt and ground black pepper to taste
2 pounds skinless chicken breasts

Marinate covered at room temperature for 2 hours (we do it in the fridge for food safety reasons).
Grill.

If using chicken pieces with skin, omit the peanut oil, peel back the skin while marinating.

Eat and enjoy!

Guess what I won’t be using in my dyeing process.

Take one vintage 1966 Kenner flatbed knitting machine…

Add accessories.

Subtract directions.

ADD RECENT TETANUS SHOT!

Subtract fun.

Add frustration.

And voila! A tiny laddery piece of crap!

Remember, kids, “It’s Kenner – It’s Fun!”

I have always relied…

They know me pretty well at my local post office, as you might expect after 900 or so packages mailed. I also know my postal clerks pretty well. And with the exception of the jackass who hit me on the head, I like all of them. (Incidentally, I never saw the head hitter again after that incident, so I never got to take him to task. Hopefully he’s somewhere far away from the general public now.)

There’s guy A who always laughs and jokes around, and there’s guy B who always has a smile and a lollipop for my daughter… and then there’s guy C. I’m gonna call him Luigi.
More about Luigi, and unrequired kindness.
