Seed stitch scarf

September 26th, 2005 4 comments

I posted this as a reply to a question over in the knitting community, then realized it said more about my life than I thought, so I wanted to post it here so I’d have a record.

Here’s a seed stitch scarf. Never mind the slit, it’s just the chunkiest seed stitch one I had.

I didn’t write down the pattern, but I’m pretty sure it’s just CO 11, *k1, p1* across. Repeat until the scarf is as long as you want. The key is that on each subsequent row, you knit the knits and purl the purls, so it has to be an odd number for that particular pattern to work.

If you want to do a slit like that, it’s pretty easy. About a third of the way up, start knitting with a separate ball halfway through the row. Continue knitting from the separate balls (or just the other end of the same ball if you’ve only got one) until the slit is as long as you need, then rejoin it with the original ball. Weave in the ends when you’re all done.

I gave that scarf to my kid’s kindergarten teacher’s assistant last year. Did she thank me? Nooooo. Of course, later she quit, apparently because they were expecting more of her than she had to do at last year’s school. I didn’t like her anyway – she was impatient, and unintentionally (I hope) belittling to the kids. I meant the scarf as something to try to show her were were all in this together and thus to improve her attitude. Yeah, that didn’t work.

It just goes to show why you shouldn’t give hand-knit things out of a sense of obligation, only out of a genuine desire to please the recipient. Too bad – it looked better on me than I’m sure it did on her.

Dinosaur hat and Donors Choose yarn contest

September 25th, 2005 No comments

My heavens, it was nice to get an order for something other than a Jayne hat. Don’t get me wrong, I loves the Jayne hats, but after 63 in a row, a break was good. I love the moxie of the teenager ordering these – he’s going to be the coolest geek in his school.

Grr. Arrgh. Pics below.

Halfway there.

The shell of the adult-sized dinosaur hat.

Dinosaur Hat In Progress

Not so fearsome now. Looks like it’s got curlers in. Those will be earflaps.

It’s late, but I set a goal for myself of getting this much done today, and that goal was stymied somewhat by unexpectedly having to give my cousin’s family a lift across town. I also didn’t get to mail a Jayne hat off to Toronto. I’ll be busy tomorrow!

On the up side, Eoworfinia got her invitations tonight, so weddings are proceeding apace.

Well, my six year old will be jumping on my bed in about five hours, so I reckon I’d better hit the hay.

Serenity draws nigh.

Looks like everybody in the community is finishing their Jayne hats. As for me, I’ve only got one more Jayne hat and one dinosaur hat that have to be in their recipients’ hands by the 30th. They’re both half-finished. I’m slightly ahead of schedule! At this rate, the people who are content to get theirs after the premiere may get them before. Yay!

I added a baby hat and swapped a sold scarf with a newer one on http://www.wearwithstyle.com. I’ve actually got a couple more things to add, as well. I’m thinking about revamping the site so it’s not all on the main page – if I keep adding things, I worry people will have to scroll too much. That won’t necessarily be a bad thing, though. Oh, well, it’s cool and it’s serving its function, so any changes can wait. Plus it’s got the cool legs that designed. 🙂

Only seven more knitting days until Serenity!

So near and yet so far.

Courtesy of , looks like bloggers can get into some advance press screenings of Serenity on Sept 27th. Sadly, the showing in my town is at 7:30. It is 15 minutes away. And my daughter usually goes to bed between 7 and 7:15, and pops up a few times before settling down to sleep.

No way we can make it.

Well, these are the sacrifices we make for parenthood. The hubby and I have plans to go on the public premiere on Sept 30th, probably a 9pm show. And that’s fine.

Hey, maybe some of y’all can make it, and if so, more power to you!

Look at the booones!

The hubby sent me a link to a news story about a giant pink bunny.

http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_1541732.html

It looks like something got lost in translation with the “knitted by dozens of grannies out of pink wool” bit, though. Gelatin’s website says “as if knitted by giant grandmothers” which throws its methods of construction into doubt, at least for me.

I won’t get into the “knitting grannies” stereotype, but I will say… that’s one huge rabbit.

Decisions, decisions.

September 20th, 2005 6 comments

Believe it or not, I do actually get orders for things besides Jayne hats. Right now, I’ve got a dinosaur hat coming up in the queue. The one in the picture is made from Lamb’s Pride worsted, which is a blend of 85% wool and 15% mohair. It has to be handwashed cool, or it’ll shrink like crazy. Example: This is made with Lamb’s Pride worsted: Before and after a couple of washings. You can’t tell in picture two, but it’s sitting on a kid’s chair and is now about 9″X12″, tops. This was deliberate, but you can imagine if something made of this accidentally got tossed in with the laundry. Yikes.

So here’s the dilemna. I’m pretty sure the guy buying the dinosaur hat is 16 years old. Possibly 15, but I think 16. I am really unsure about sending a hand-wash-only garment to a 16-year-old guy. I just *know* it’s going to get ruined. And while I am fine with the idea that once it leaves my hands, it is out of my control and no longer mine, I would just hate for this guy’s hat to get trashed by accident.

He says he wants it to look like the one in the picture, earflaps and ties and all. I am toying with the idea of using a different wool, one that is superwash (meaning it can go into the washing machine). But it wouldn’t look exactly the same. The superwash wool has a couple of strands together, like this while the Lamb’s Pride is a single, with one big strand like this.

So do I keep it the same and just really hammer home the care instructions, or do I try to save him from himself?

Opinions?

Today’s my husband’s birthday. I don’t suppose I could play off buying We Love Katamari as a birthday gift for him, could I?

No?

Drat.

Help, O internet savvy people!

September 17th, 2005 12 comments

I’m going out of my gourd. I’m looking for some size 4 white woven boxer shorts. Not knit boxer-brief types, but actual boxers. They have to be white. If they’re size 6, it won’t be the end of the world, but size 4 is preferred.

I have a friend whose son is potty-training, and boxers work better for him than briefs. He loves Dora the Explorer, but of course they don’t make stuff for boys with Dora on it, sexist corporate jerks. His mom’s been very ncie to me, and as a thank you, I want to iron-on some Dora transfers onto some white boxers for her son.

Except I can’t find the white boxers.

Help?
