Surprise snow

February 4th, 2009 4 comments

gluey mermaids
I went to bed last night with everyone around me having seen snow. In most cases they called to gloat about it. , I’m looking at you. I was only about a mile from his house and I didn’t see any. I didn’t see any until just at bedtime, when I looked out the window once more and whaddya know, it was snowing! I went to bed happy.

The phone rang this morning just before 6 with an automated message saying that there was no school. That was quite a surprise! However, I was prepared. Last night after knitting guild I thought, “You know, I don’t have any rainy day activities for Em at the moment. I really should grab an activity book or two.” I try to have stuff on hand in case she’s sick or needs a little lift. Books-A-Million was on my way home, so I stopped by and grabbed a Klutz book I thought she’d like. She’s currently squirting giant globs of glue onto mermaid’s tails and pasting on sequins. When even Em says, “I think I put too much glue there,” you know there’s a lot of glue. Good fun!

I also had the foresight to pick up a mocha and stash it in the fridge, just in case. We’re well-prepared for this snow day.

Word games

A process-of-elimination game made by my smart daughter. I used to love these when I was a kid. She had me do it, and then she made another one afterward. Good times.

We got back her report card, which was satisfactory. It’s the stupid standardized testing that kills her.

Fishwatch 2009: I think Kathleen might have a mild case of fin rot. I’m not sure. Her fins look a little more ragged than they did when we brought her home, but it might be my imagination. It would be caused mainly by her not having clean enough water, and since this is the first fish we’ve had, it’s very possible that I’ve been too slack with this as I learn how to take care of her. Em feeds her quite responsibly, but it seems a bit much to ask her to change the water and clean the tank without injuring the fish, so I handle that.

I’m going to change her water this morning anyway, so I guess I’ll stop by the pet store first and pick up some additives.

Aside from that, it’s all Jayne hats, Jayne hats, Jayne hats today.

Oho the Wells Fargo Wagon is a comin’!

January 26th, 2009 8 comments

Supposedly today the folks are coming to hook up our new internet connection. This is a problem because, as you can tell by the fact that I’m able to post this this morning, our old internet connection is still active. It was supposed to have been turned off last Monday. Just one more example of how unresponsive our old provider was.

We’re not sure they’ll be able to turn on the new one if the old one is still working. I guess we’ll see. In the meantime, I’ll be sticking around the house, just in case. I have no clue when the internet may be up or down, so bear with me if I disappear for a while for no apparent reason.

At right: I wish! I would totally go see that, and I would bring my family, and we would buy popcorn and have a fantastic time. She drew this yesterday morning, and in the evening she opened up our big CD binder labeled “movies.” “I just want to look at them, not to watch them,” she said. Then she flipped through them all, stopping at one page and saying, “The Music Man is in here.” “You can watch that one,” Mr. Tvini said. Quick as lightning, she had it out of the binder and into the DVD player and was singing along. You can’t go wrong with The Music Man.

I’m hoping the Wells Fargo wagon is bringing me some new internet today.

Merry Christmas, mon!

January 24th, 2009 8 comments

Em’s still clinging to Christmas. According to her, she’s going to find a fir cone, get a fir seed, and grow a Christmas tree.

Today I was putting away the manger scene and found the angel tucked away in the back. That’s Scotch tape around her midsection there. At least there wasn’t glue involved.

Just before bed she asked me if I knew what Calypso was. I talked about the myth and the music and she told me this:

Em: “You can write a Calypso Christmas song. You can call it whatever you want.”
Me: “That might take a while; I’d need to think about that.”
Em: “You can teach it to me tomorrow. Good night!”

But no pressure. You’re killing me, kid.

Tasty!

I regularly make cookie dough from scratch. I use Ghirardelli chocolate chips (they’re not that much more expensive) and part whole wheat flour, and add in various other good-for-you additions. They’re delicious, trust me. I refrigerate the dough and it keeps for quite a while. This way, I can make just a few cookies at a time. Usually I wind up making a batch of six – no more, no less, that’s what Em wants – right after Em gets home from school. It’s a tasty little snack and a nice way to unwind.

Over the last couple of months, Em’s been doing something unusual. She lines up her cookies in a row on a table and then, when she picks one up, she uses her other hand to touch the spot where it was with the front of her hand and then the back of her hand, eight times. Front back front back front back front back. Eight times, every time, every cookie. She’s already got a few neurological things going on, I figured this was just a little OCD tic, fairly harmless and not any weirder than things other kids do.

Today she was halfway through her cookies and she did her little front back thing, and paused after the eighth… then did another eight. She did it for the next one too without the pause. So now she’s doing 16 for every cookie.

It’s not hurting anything so I don’t see any reason to stop her, but I have a gut feeling that puberty’s just beginning to barely think of rearing its head and I’m just hoping this doesn’t mean it will be accompanied some new neurological issue for us to enjoy.

Where the humuhumunukunuku ā pua’a go swimming by…

Em got one final Christmas gift today from another cousin.

That’s right. A ukulele. A completely awesome ukulele, for there is no other kind.

It’s for a kid, so it’s not exactly concert quality and I’m having a little trouble getting it to stay in tune, but without too much work I think I can get it working just fine.

I have always wanted to be able to play the ukulele, so I’m going to have to try very hard to avoid stealing this from her. Now we can form a band. Hubby on drums, me on piano, and Em on ukulele. I’ve got a barn, let’s put on a show!

Em’s space fish seems to have inspired her to space silliness.

Helmet off.

Fishwatch 2009: Still alive. Was carefully fed exactly two small pellets upon owner’s arrival home from school. Prognosis: good.

A belated Christmas gift for my daughter, who is very excited by the prospect of having a fish. This came from her cousins up in Raleigh. Ever the optimist, my girl observes that “she’s not dead!” It’s been less than a day. So far, so good.

The fish has no name yet. That may be just as well. I’ve taken great pains with its health, following the instructions included and also the advice from bettatalk.com but… well… we’ll see. Live, little anonyfish! Swim among the stars!

Oh, and I must mention their other gift, the constellation umbrella. This is going to be a hard one not to steal.

These gifts came from the family I made the FuzzyFeet for. I’m glad I made the effort, they’re good people.
