Avalanche of Awesome : !

Since I started making Jayne hats, I have met some of the nicest people in the world. And one of them is , also known as Wendy from Alaska. First she sent me her Jayne hat order in the form of a letter from Patience (Browncoats, this is the lady on Whitefall who had previously shot Mal). Then she became a regular reader and commenter on this journal, and her responses have brightened up my days. Then, upon hearing that my daughter and I had birthdays coming up, she really went way above and beyond.

Behold! Badger sent us mail! I suspect, however, that Wendy actually did the wrapping. I think Badger probably would have botched the job, sending a big ball of paper with tape sticking out all over. On the other hand, I don’t know what Badger does with his personal time, maybe he’s big into origami. He did take the time to write a beautiful note, “from one businessperson to another.” Heh. I love it.

And what did Badger see fit to send? Let’s start with Em!

Em got the two lovely packages in wrapping paper that you see above. They arrived before her birthday, so I told her she could open them now or wait. She split the difference and opened one immediately and saved the other for her party. The one she opened immediately contained finger puppets! These are a special love of ‘s and they were much appreciated by Em. In this picture, she is imagining that the dog finger puppet is eating the others, one by one. I had no idea that Alaskan life was so brutal!

But wait! There’s more! On the big day, Em opened this one at the party. This was perfect. Em loves paper dolls! She waited until the party was over to start punching them out, thankfully, but she has really enjoyed this. Badger has a surprisingly good insight into the mind of a child. Come to think of it, maybe it’s not that surprising.

But what about me? As a fellow businessperson, Badger sent me supplies. Yarn! Red Heart “Heart & Sole” yarn, in fact, enough to make three pairs of socks. I haven’t knitted with this before, so I’m looking forward to this. It’s 70% superwash wool, 30% nylon so it should be hard-wearing, and it’s finished with aloe vera, so my hands will get a little treat while I knit with it. Badger knows his stuff! I don’t want to think about how he managed to acquire this stuff in Alaska, let alone in space. Are there yarn shops on the Eavesdown Docks? People on streetcorners hawking balls of wool? Black market deals for the good stuff? Well, I’ll ask no questions. That way when the Alliance picks me up, I can honestly say I don’t know.

Leaving aside Badger for a moment, Wendy aka was kind enough to make me this necklace. As you can see, I love it. What a thoughtful gift.

This was really above and beyond the call of duty. Em is thrilled, I’m thrilled, and Wendy, you’re going to be thrilled with your new hat WHEN MY FREAKIN’ YELLOW YARN FINALLY COMES IN. Maybe you can get Badger to shake down the people at the mill. He seems to have crafty connections everywhere.

Thank you, Wendy. This was a kind and generous gift, and my family and I appreciate it. I’m genuinely touched.

(Edited to fix my mistake – the yarn is Heart & Sole, not Sock-Ease!)

That’ll be 6 pairs of socks uless you’ve got really big feet, or maybe 3 matching mother/daughter sets. Sock-Ease is 100g balls.

Ooh, wait, maybe I said the wrong yarn type. I don’t have them in front of me, but I would have sworn they were 50g balls…

    Awwww, I’m blushing

I am so touched that you thanked me like this, Heather. I am over the moon. As far as Badger is concerned, I have him wrapped around my little finger (literally, he’s hanging on right there!…lol). I’ll see what he can do! I’m just so glad Emily liked her gifts. And you like the yarn. I was told it was good stuff. I am trying to get you musk ox and pure Dahl sheep wool this spring when the Native Alaskans collect it. All I ask is you post a pic of what you did with it!

Patience is fuming. She thinks Badger is usurping her place in your heart…lol. She’s already shot me and most of her kin. I think she was even too tough for Reavers to digest which is why she’s still around.

Makes sense, Sock-Ease is more solid with little contrasting stripes instead of striped all over. The bit of label that’s showing looks like Red Heart’s Heart & Sole.

Ah, you beat me to it! That’s exactly what it is. Frankly, I think I like the look of the Heart & Sole better.

Patience shoots like other people sneeze. It’s just a reflexive response to irritants. Don’t take it personally.
