Is it my imagination, or are all of this person’s hats actually other peoples’ designs tweaked just a bit?

Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but if that’s what’s going on, I figure they should be politely informed that it’s Not Cool. To that end, I gave a heads-up to the designers, so they could make their own call.

Of course, I could be totally wrong. It wouldn’t be the first time.

I myself made the sock monkey hat last year, so that’s what hit my radar when I saw this post.

In other news, I’m working on hats from Feb 7th and later, so we’re currently on schedule with the Jaynes. Yay!

    You know what? I’m not the most clues in person on the planet, but I looked at each one of those and said, oh, that’s — and — and –. So that’s some evidence that they might not be all that original.

    I agree – tweaked, and not that much, especially since that poster is selling them.

    Yeah. You hit that nail on the head. But besides that, those sock monkey hats look like crap. I can’t believe she’s sold 2 of them.

    They are all rather alike but are different enough that to some degree, I mean.. what would you pinpoint in order to make an argument hold up? There are only x number of ways to make something look like a sock monkey before it doesn’t. There are x number of ways to knit a skull design and even then, would a skull design necessarily be copyrightable? There are x number of ways to make a trellis design (name it what you will, it’s still a trellis).

    Now.. having all those hats together, all closely resembling some of the most popular designs from an unnamed community, yes it sure sets off some bells but still.. some might argue it’s circumstantial evidence.

    I’m not CONDONING this, mind you.. just trying to narrow the argument down.

There are only x number of ways to make something look like a sock monkey before it doesn’t. There are x number of ways to knit a skull design and even then, would a skull design necessarily be copyrightable? There are x number of ways to make a trellis design (name it what you will, it’s still a trellis).

    Now.. having all those hats together, all closely resembling some of the most popular designs from an unnamed community, yes it sure sets off some bells but still.. some might argue it’s circumstantial evidence.

    I’m not CONDONING this, mind you.. just trying to narrow the argument down.

    Of all of them, the one I’d most have a problem with is the koolhaas. It seems nearly identical.

    Yes, I would agree with that… Wonder if this is something that Interweave would pursue or if it’d be up to Jared..

    Also – from the Saturday page – the Chinese take-out earrings are faboo. Good thing I don’t typically wear earrings or else I’d be all over them and spending money I don’t need to spend 😀

    I would say there are some copyright issues there, but it would also depend on what the designers, who give out the patterns, say. If they are permitted to be used for commercial use, and not just personal, well then the person selling them would be in the clear. If they aren’t permitted to be used for commercial use.. then there are some definite problems.

    The designers should be able to contact Etsy about having the hats taken down.

    Agreed. I brought it to the attention of the designers, who can do whatever they feel is appropriate. There’s probably not much to be done for it, but I couldn’t just shake my head ineffectually and let it go.

    …and Koolhaas is nearly identical to the swatch I did for the Morrigan sweater (and by vague extension, Shedir). But even considering that – as a whole, it’s rather fishy. The pirate hat pinged my radar the most, because the chart for the skull band looks to be identical, with a different peerie.
