Knitting

December 8th, 2006 4 comments

Well, now that it’s too late to get in line for a finished Jayne by Christmas, the kit orders are coming at a rate of several a day. Fortunately, those can go out very quickly.

There are still some non-Jayne orders in the queue, like this Space Invaders hat at left that someone custom ordered in black and blue. Click for larger pics. I actually had to redo it twice. The first time I was flying through it, and as a result got my tension far too tight on the charted portion. I put it on and it was like I had a vise around my head. The second time, it looked fine, but because I’d used more blue yarn I’d spliced two pieces together and it made a noticeable bump in one of the “pixels” of the chart. Maybe he wouldn’t notice, but it was bugging me. The third time’s the charm, though. The inside looks quite even, too, not that the recipient will care. 🙂

This is the Crusoe sock I’ve been working on. I actually put it aside last week to focus on Christmas knitting, but am looking forward to picking it back up since I’m so close to finishing up the first one. Maybe by Spring I’ll have some very festive socks.

Back to work – even with the built in “hit by a bus” time in my estimates, I’m falling a little behind on orders!

Brownies, take two.

December 6th, 2006 No comments

I have a meeting with the other Brownie moms and the volunteer coordinator from Girl Scout headquarters tonight to discuss what the heck we’re going to do about getting our troop together. One of the other moms volunteered a location that’s much closer to my home, so that’s good. The woman from HQ is also bringing a woman who’s interested in volunteering, except she doesn’t have any kids. She says she understands that that could make us wary. That’s a bit of an understatement. However, I am heartened to hear that she has a “traditional girl scout background” which presumably would involve more than just making glittery foam princess crowns. We’ll see how it all goes.

The meeting’s from 6-7, and then if I’m not too wiped, I’ll be going to the weekly stitch session. I’ve been getting less than six hours of sleep a night all week because of increased Dragonrealms commitments, and now my back is starting to hurt too because I sit in an odd position at the computer. I am really looking forward to my weekly cup of sweet, sweet coffee tonight. Mmmmm… coffee.

The daughter has no homework tonight, although we’ll be going over math stuff later anyway as that’s a weak area for her. At the moment she is making Sims 2 versions of the Powerpuff Girls.

I should have a finished object to post in the next day or so, once I get around to actually taking pics.

Hee hee!

My daughter, watching me knit another hat: “Who’s this hat for?”

Me: “You know, I can’t remember their name. It’s not somebody you’ve met, though.”

My daughter: “Is this another hat for your friend Jayne?”

HAHAHAHAAAA! I had no idea she’d picked up on that. Apparently she was hearing “I make Jayne hats” as in “I make hats for Jayne” as opposed to a certain style of hat. About 400 hats I’ve knit, I don’t know what the heck Jayne keeps doing with them all.

Good!

November 30th, 2006 14 comments

You may or may not have seen the video of the U.S. soldiers teasing Iraqi children with a water bottle. If you have a low tolerance for human cruelty, I’d recommend against watching it.

Almost as bad as the fact that they did this in the first place is the fact that they decided it was funny enough to capture on video and share. Jerks. I imagine they didn’t think that someone it was forwarded to would put it on YouTube, or that it would wind up getting the publicity it has.

However! The good news is that people at the Pentagon saw the video and are now investigating. (Link to another blog). Good. I only had the stomach to watch the video once, because it made me so angry. Let’s hope there are some consequences for these assholes.
