There are quite a few of these chomping away.  A good third of the tomato plants have been denuded.  Fortunately, it was the end of the season anyway.  And they&#8217;ll become a pretty moth, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silkmoths.bizland.com\/msextsex.htm\" target=\"blank\">Carolina Sphinx.<\/a><br \/>\n<br clear=all><br \/>\n<center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/93468786@N00\/4921649124\/\" title=\"tobacco hornworm by emisanboo, on Flickr\" target=\"blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4115\/4921649124_41a5fc06c4.jpg\" height=\"250\" alt=\"tobacco hornworm\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/93468786@N00\/4921649434\/\" title=\"hornworm spike by emisanboo, on Flickr\" target=\"blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4138\/4921649434_081e5b1b00.jpg\" height=\"250\" alt=\"hornworm spike\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nEven though the tomatoes are goners, the circle of life is in full swing in our little garden.  See the white things on the caterpillars below?<br \/>\n<center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/93468786@N00\/4921054157\/\" title=\"wasp cocoons hornworms by emisanboo, on Flickr\" target=\"blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4081\/4921054157_673800ef37.jpg\" height=\"250\" alt=\"wasp cocoons hornworms\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nApparently the <a href=\"http:\/\/aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu\/galveston\/beneficials\/beneficial-04_braconid_wasp_on_hornworm.htm\" target=\"blank\">cotesia wasp<\/a>, which is tiny and doesn&#8217;t sting people, lays its eggs inside the tobacco hornworm.  Then the larvae burrow through the skin and spin cocoons.  Eventually they&#8217;ll consume the host.  It&#8217;s a heck of a way to solve our caterpillar problem, but I suppose it&#8217;s healthier than pesticides.
