The orders keep coming in.

I’m having to turn people away now. I don’t like doing that.

I have decided that I will need to employ a small Chinese orphanage in order to keep up with demand for Jayne hats.

The woman I ordered my orange and red yarn from on eBay was cleaning out her storage area preparatory to putting in a new floor, and lo and behold! She found 3 cones of Sunburst Gold. That is the exact amount of the exact color I need!

I love it when things come together.

Clean bill of health

Went to the mammogram today, which was interesting. I’m a little scientist, and so when I go to this sort of thing, I’m always very curious about every aspect of it. It was also, of course, uncomfortable having my flesh smooshed into a pancake. At any rate, it looks like the lump is, in fact, just a fibrocystic doodad and nothing to worry about, so I don’t go back until I’m 40. Huzzah!

The parking deck had an elevator with an enclosed waiting area. The walls dropped down to encompass the entire column of waiting areas which were on every floor, by which I mean that it wasn’t compartmentalized boxes containing each waiting area, but instead there was room for air to circulate between levels on the sides, more like a long tube with concrete platforms.

The acoustics were amazing.

After I was done with my appointment, I went back to my floor and belted out “Dancing Cheek to Cheek” and “Honeybun” and a few other tunes. Fortunately, nobody came in, and I didn’t hear anyone on the other floors. MAN, did that feel good! If I didn’t have to pay $2 for parking, I’d go back there frequently just to sing.

In Jayne hat news, NOBODY has my Lamb’s Pride Bulky in Sunset Gold in stock. The mill apparently won’t be dyeing more for another couple of weeks. Allowing for that, it looks like the quickest I may be able to get it is 2 1/2 weeks from now. I’ve already ordered 1500 yards each of orange and red, so I can’t really change my brand of yarn at this point, and it’ll look weird to have the top in a different texture than the bottom and flaps.

I’m spending some time calling yarn shops in NC to see if there’s anyplace I can drive that may have the odd skein to tide me over. As it is, this is a serious impediment. I’ve only got one skein, and it takes 1/2 a skein to make a hat. This is Not Good.

An unforeseen development.

Well, the teachers will not be getting flower washcloths. I’ll probably do angel earrings, which I can slap together much faster.

Why no flower washcloths?

I got an e-mail from a guy in the UK wanting 20 Jayne hats by the end of July for a fan table at a convention in Birmingham. As near as I can tell, it’s the Memorabilia convention. Let’s see… 60 days, 20 hats, takes me about 2-3 days to make a hat depending on what else is going on (DR weddings come first!) so that’s… all my knitting time.

I wonder if I’d get tired of knitting the exact same thing 20 times in a row, even if it were a Jayne hat. Hmmm. It is enough money to cover my gas and hotel getting me to Simucon – but I probably wouldn’t have time to make anything new for my table there.

Argh! Decisions, decisions! I’m leaning toward “do it” but am uncertain. Thoughts?

ETA: I decided to do it. Hats completed: 1!

Teacher gifts

Here’s what the felted soap looks like, although designs and colors vary. http://www.booboomonkey.com/tvini/soap1.jpg

Here’s what the flower washcloth looks like. Colors vary. http://www.keyboardbiologist.net/KnittingGallery/ReverseBloomPersimmon.htm

Both would be accompanied by a few other bath/beauty type products. The felted soap would be quicker, but weirder. The flower washcloth would take longer, but is probably more traditional. I have at least four teachers to provide gifts for.

Thoughts? Other options I haven’t thought of? I’m a bit leery of doing hats or garments, since that seems like it could vary so much from person to person.

I’m trying to figure out inventory for Simucon, deciding whether to set up a table to sell knit goods and bindis again. It was really fun last year. I enjoyed being in my little spot in the hall, yet also having the freedom to close up shop and stash my things in my hotel room. I’m just not sure what to make for this year – I’ve got a little inventory in stock, but web sales are good, so I’ve got less stuff on hand this year and not a lot of time to make more things.

The main issue is, everybody wants Jayne hats! For the uninitiated, it’s a version of the knitted hat that Jayne Cobb wears in the Firefly episode, “The Message.” I’m assuming that since the movie “Serenity” is coming out in September, people want a Jayne hat. I know that I have to remember to actually make one for myself so I can wear one to the movie!

Many thanks to a link from another maker of the hats, I’ve seen a significant uptick in orders for hats. Like, several inquiries and orders in the last couple of weeks. This means I have less time to make other stuff.

I’d hate to not do it, since a) it was fun, and b) net profits paid my gas and hotel bills, at least getting to and from Simucon.

So I guess the question is up for debate again this year – If I set up a table again this year, what should I make to sell at Simucon? Floofy scarves and zany hats were popular last year, and they’re a quick, fun knit. Gimme input!

Happiness.

My dear friend, an old roommate from college, was blown away by the sheep blanket for her upcoming baby and the dinosaur hat for her older son. To say that she was effusive in her praise would be an understatement.

Yes, I feel very good about myself now, I must admit. She’s a wonderful person whom I love, and I am grateful that I was able to do something to show her that.

Incidentally, she was maid of honor at my wedding, and my husband’s best friend was our best man. Did we set those two up? Of course. And now they’re married with that aforementioned second kid on the way.

Why yes, I am the wedding guru, why do you ask?

(Sorry for the pun, Firefly fans, I’m knitting another Jayne hat.)

So I went to the doctor today because I had a lump in my breast. Did I delay for, like, a month because I’m a moron? Yes. Normally I don’t, but I just got busy, which is the lamest excuse possible. It won’t happen again.

Anyway, it’s not cancer, thank God.

It’s only fibrocystic changes. Apparently, I got a little tiny mass in there, and it aches. Coincidentally, it’s right where I had a plugged duct when I was nursing. But now I get the joy of my first mammogram. Woo. (Guys reading this are now making the “TMI!” face.)

So let’s review: up-side: probably not cancerous, probably won’t die. down-side: made worse by caffeine and chocolate. That’s right, my two favorite things in the world.

So now to make the boobie-ache go away, I gotta quit drinking caffeinated lattes – and definitely no more of my beloved mochas. Bear with me as I come down from the sweet, sweet heights of Mount Chocolympus and begin trudging through life without coffee.

And I thought kicking the antidepressants was bad. Grumble.
