I don’t think it would occur to me to give a small girl a home permanent.

Unfortunately, I lived through many of these, albeit in the eighties. Probably 4th or 5th grade for my first. Total Argh.

I remember having to sit still when my hair was wet so my mom could braid it. That was torture enough. This would’ve turned me into a gibbering idiot.
Uhm.. wait. Nevermind!

Yup – I sat through many a home perm as a kid. I’m betting the first was in 2nd or 3rd grade.

In the ethnic section of WalMarts, there’s a ton of hair relaxer for kids, called “Just For Me!” The girls on the boxes don’t look over 12.

I have pictures of my mother giving me my first perm when I was three years old. She did it again, complete with shag haircut, when I was in third grade. I felt like I lived with curlers in my hair when I was little.

My mom gave me these. I swore when I grew up I would never get anorher perm. I spent my childhood coveted in frizz. Don’t think it helped my brain much either.

baby perms I had ’em
My mom said she gave me one of these when I was really little. I wasn’t even walking. The irony? I have the curliest hair a white person can have. And I haven’t been a year old in 47 years.
