FO: Ultra Alpaca striped hat

Pattern: Brooklyn Tweed’s “Turn A Square Hat” (with modifications)
Yarn: Berroco Ultra Alpaca
Needles: 16″ size 6 circs (two circs for crown)
Notes: I might decrease the number of body stitches next time – it’s just a little looser than I’d like, but not unacceptably so. Also, while I know it won’t have sharp corners if the double decreases are separated by a knit stitch between, I still might try that. I’m not sure how I feel about the gap that it creates. It’s not what I’d normally do. I love the colors that Ultra Alpaca comes in. You get a lot of bang for your buck with this yarn. All in all, I’m pleased.

    Thanks for posting about this hat. I’m currently working on this hat for the 3rd time! I keep getting dissatisfied w/the gaps that are caused by the double decreases, too.

    I had posted to 2 different groups about this problem & no one seemed to know what I was talking about, nor did they seem to have a solution. Finally….someone has had a similar experience /w/this pattern. I may try your idea of knitting a st. betw. the dec.

    Your hat looks great by the way. The hat that I had almost finished, before ripping out because of the gaps…..was a little big, too. I’m not too sure that my son is going to like it or not. He likes these kinds of hats to hug his head.

    Thanks! Yeah, I dropped down a needle size and I still think it’s a little loose. Next time I make one, I’ll come down another four or eight stitches.

    When I’m doing decreases on either side of a marker doing socks, I always put a couple of stitches between. Instead of ssk, k2tog, I do ssk, k1, k1, k2tog, and it doesn’t cause any gaps. I think that’s what I’ll do next time.

    Thanks! I had the greens left over from a green Jayne hat and I picked up the brown with this in mind when I stopped by Charlotte Yarn‘s new location. Buying new yarn on the first stop to the store’s new home seemed like the thing to do.
