Best. Jayne hat knitter. Ever.

Jayne’s mom called me on the phone on Friday.

She was a little old lady who had never heard of Firefly or Serenity, but she saw a picture of the hat in the newspaper and thought it would be just darling for her grandson. She wanted to order a kit so she could make one for him. We talked for a while, and she said she thought she’d rather do it in blues and purples…

… which I happen to have on hand, so that works right out.

I gave her a discount because she’s in town and I wouldn’t have to ship. It turns out I’ll be shipping anyway, but I don’t mind. I’m also going to size the pattern down for her, because her grandson is still a child.

I swear, it was just like talking to Jayne’s mom. She just wanted something fun and nice to keep her baby warm in space.

Well, the “in space” part might have been implied.

You know what this is, right? You’ve started a causality loop in time.

See, you’re gonna give this pattern to this little old lady. And she is gonna be CHARMED AS HELL by it. So she’s gonna make the hat and pass the hat down the line. It’s gonna get warped a bit. The colors are going to go through the rainbow. And someday, at some point, when the American-Chinese relations have been settled and we’re all through the galaxy, some little old lady is gonna go through all her recordings and old-style paper files and find this trail of the family hat.

So she’s gonna make one for her son, named Jayne. The loop closes, Whedon wakes up about five, ten years ago, the docudrama Firefly starts germinating, and somehow he gets an inking in mind of that damn hat.

We’re doomed to repeat the cycle of history now. I only hope my family’s descendents get more action than poor Kaylee.
