Stitches: Darning egg

This is the most practical purchase I made at Stitches South. The heels of my Tofutsies socks have worn thin, and for a long time I’ve wanted a really pretty wooden darning egg to help with the mending. This hand-carved beauty is made of walnut and came from the Knitting Notions booth. Their store is located in Nashville and they have an online storefront as well.

I love this. It’s something beautiful that I’ll actually use, making it an easy purchase to justify.

Okay, so I imagine that it helps you just keep it taut while you work on it, but what does that really do? (Not that it’ll be very easy for you to explain in words :P)

That’s pretty much it. It holds the fabric in a more foot-like shape. I’m still getting used to it, so time will tell how helpful it is for me. I imagine if the socks were in worse shape I’d need it more.

Fluffyknitterdeb also demonstrates how to use a darning egg to snug up your kitchenered toe to the proper tension. I’ll try that on my next cuff-down pair of socks!

It does look very pretty and ornate. And can double as a belaying pin should trouble arise.
