Food, knitting, and TV.

I am now certified in CPR and First Aid, so if you’re going to lose a limb or drop dead, please try to wait until I am in the immediate vicinity.

Normally I’m very skeptical of anecdotal reports of successful dietary and therapeutic treatments for autism, since as parents we tend to grasp at whatever flotsam is within reach to keep hope afloat. However, it appears there is some actual scientific data now behind some of the dietary treatments. My mother sent me the articles here and here are about a team of New Jersey scientists who have been doing interesting research into fatty acids and autism. If this research is borne out, I’ll consider it the best news out of Jersey since… well, I can’t think of any other good news out of Jersey. Badum *CHING!*

I remember trying something – DMG? magnesium? I can’t even remember the name – when Emily was first diagnosed, but it was mainly based on anecdotal reports and didn’t do anything that I can see. However, interestingly, I did start adding Omega-3 acids to her diet by coincidence about a week and a half ago. Remember the peanut butter salmonella scare? Well, we had FOUR jars of the stuff (there was a buy one, get one sale) when it was recalled. I had to buy another brand, so I went with Smart Balance Omega brand peanut butter, which has Omega 3 and 6 oils added. If we couldn’t have our usual “vitamins and minerals added” peanut butter, I figured we’d try something else with a little “oomph.”

It may be a total coincidence, just one of her regular peaks in the “peaks and valleys” cycle she goes through sometime, but she has been making noticeably more eye contact and speaking better for the last few days. I’ve bought some Udo’s 3-6-9 oil and have been mixing about a quarter teaspoon with her peanut butter over the weekend, and she hasn’t noticed any difference in taste that I can see. Like I say, this may be a complete coincidence, and just wishful thinking, but if it’s not hurting anything, I say keep it up for a while and see what happens. I’m not mentioning this to her school so that I can have some unbiased observers.

In non-autism news, Emily informed me last night that when a horse doesn’t have its mane, it’s called “roaching.” And she’s right! I didn’t know this. Where the heck is she learning this stuff?

In knitting news, I want to post about the finished socks, but have decided that I want to include pictures of them after they’ve been washed and worn a couple of times. Burned by Koigu, I now think it’s important to show how the yarn holds up, for others who may be thinking of using it. I’ve worn and washed them twice, and they’re hanging over the shower rod drying now. The weather’s a little too dicey to hang them out on the line, but hopefully it won’t be too much longer before I can post them.

I have 14 balls of Plymouth Turino 100% silk in color 04 that I picked up at a half-off sale a couple of years ago, thinking that it would make a beautiful sweater. It would, too, it’s gorgeous and tweedy and has a great nubbly texture. I started to swatch some last night with an eye toward making Eris, the cabled sweater pattern that the lovely got me a while back (thanks again!). I love this sweater and really want to make it, and I thought it might be good to get some seaming practice in before I botched started my dad’s sweater. However, having swatched it, there’s no way I’m going to get an appropriate fabric for this sweater with this yarn, no matter what needle size I use. I may eBay it or otherwise try to sell it fairly cheap. It’s really pretty stuff. I’m not sure why it was discontinued. The 1470 yards I’ve got would make a good larger garment for a man or woman, but it’s a little tough on my hands and I have no idea when I might actually use it.

Stayed up far too late to watch the Academy Awards because I was actually interested in the outcome, what with Peter O’Toole being nominated. I saw very few of these movies, but we’ll be Netflixing them as they become available. I didn’t see the Last King of Scotland, but I am nonetheless shocked – shocked! – that Peter O’Toole didn’t win. Peter! You’ll always be my favorite! Keep working, you’ll get ’em next year!

Speaking of Netflix, we’ve been going through British sitcoms, like I’m Alan Partridge and The Peep Show. Love you Brits and your comedies, but you are strange, strange people. Currently in the house from Netflix are Seven Samurai and The Producers – the original, not the musical. Thanks to my dad, I’ve got good ‘grazing’ TV to watch while I knit Jayne hats, too. I knitted up three this weekend, including one during first aid training. It was mostly just a video, I swear I’m qualified. I didn’t knit during CPR! I think they frown on it when you puncture the mannequins with knitting needles.

Off to the bank, the post office, and various other ports of call. Have a great day!

Knits up for: MI, WI, TX.

Have you watched Extras at all? I just now found out HBO is broadcasting it.

Yes! Hilarious! We don’t get HBO, but we did Netflix season one. I couldn’t watch Kate Winslet at the Oscars last night without hearing her say, “”I’d love it if you stuck your Willy Wonka between my Oompa Loompas.”

    Hee hee!

There’s some other show I just caught, it has the guy who played Ed from Shaun of the Dead as a Captain Kirk-esque spaceship captain. I think it’s called Hyperspace. I only saw the one half of an episode, but it was pretty good.

Have you seen Little Britain? Or Father Ted? The latter is an all-time favorite.

Forrest Whittaker was *excellent* in The Last King of Scotland. Keep in mind if you ever want to watch it that it’s a fairly bruttally violent movie. I’d avoid snacking while watching.

I’d only seen about half the movies, but I’m still pissy about Cars losing to Happy Feet. Leo DiCaprio referring to Al Core as a level 12 VP made my night though. (Also, when did DiCaprio get hot? Not a fan of his circa Titanic, but he’s looking good these days.)

There were trailers for Little Britan (which makes me think of “Wee Britain” from Arrested Development) on the Peep Show DVD. I’ve heard about Father Ted but haven’t seen it. I’ll ask the hubby to Netflix it. 🙂

Yeah, he said something like “Does the level 12 VP have anything to say/add?” and I was like “I HAVE RIDDEN THE MIGHTY MOON WORM!!” but Gore did not say that. If he’d greeted the crowd as Earthians it would have made my year.

Hm, I wonder if P eats anything we could mix that into. Beverages, I guess.

There’s also interesting news about genetic components.

My theory is that there’s more than one thing we’re currently calling autism. There’s the group that has the digestive issues as well as the developmental/social/communication ones, and I think that might well be a different problem entirely, with similar symptoms. Which would explain why CFGF diets seem to help some people and do nothing for others.

    Father Ted?

Hi-larious! I keep saying I’m going to purchase the series, and keep putting it off – but I’ve seen a large chunk of it. If you “get” British humor, you will *love* Father Ted!

My favorite character is the retired priest….. 🙂

    Hmmmm….

I’ve got a cardigan pattern for the looms I use, and I’m going to need a lot of yarn to try it. If you’re serious about unloading a lot of yarn in the same color, what are you thinking of asking for it? E-mail me at dragoness2525@gmail.com, if you want to talk…. 🙂

You know if there is a yarn you have in mind for Eris, you could maybe post on and find someone who will trade some nice wool for a silk tweed.

    How’s Deadwood coming? Done yet?

    Cocksucker.
