Design

I was going to post it later, but someone asked, so this is what the design is. The full-color will be the big issue as far as cost and quality, I think.

I had someone who isn’t familiar with the world of Firefly tell me that they would think “website designer” if they just saw “designer” on there. These are meant to go out to people who are specifically interested in Jayne hats, so I’m not sure whether it’ll be unclear or not. We’re looking at another design for regular use. I think this is fine, but I’ve also been looking at it for a while, so now I’m wondering. Thoughts? Add a “custom knits and knitting kits” line? Add “knits” to the “designer?” A great design is a great design, but it also has to serve its commercial audience.

Li’l Jayne, however, STAYS.

I love how “custome knits and knitting kits” rolls off my tongue. It’s fun to say. I vote you add it! I’d even consider using it in place of “designer”.

I was totally JUST thinking that. And by that I mean I was saying “custom knits and knitting kits!” over and over in my head ;p

Personally, I think you should make sure to include this important title.

Whether you remove or replace designer is another question.

    Custom knits designer?

Yeah, the 4 color bumps up the price. Offset printed cards would probably be prohibitive. In order to get good edge quality, make sure you set up some ‘bleeds’, basically make the color bigger than the card so when you trim it there isn’t a little sliver of white along the edge. I think that’s a big factor for whether a card screams “amateur!” to me. That, and being crooked or off center.

Although be careful. If the back of the card is white, and they’re not careful the ink can smudge and bleed to the back. We got a bunch of deep purple cards done for my Dad’s Church and ran into that problem.

I agree with the “custom knits & knitting kits” & the nice lady is a good touch too! Cute graphic, did you design that yourself? Overall it’s a pretty rad card 🙂

That doesn’t really have to do with the edge bleed though. If they’re smudging to the back, either the ink didn’t set properly before the cards were stacked, or it’s not the right kind of ink for the paper. It’s a giant pain in the ass when it happens, because the only thing to do is redo the job. When I worked at my stepdad’s shop as a teenager, I accidentally ruined a whole order because I forgot to refill the drying powder thing on the press before I ran it. Not fun.

“If they’re smudging to the back, either the ink didn’t set properly before the cards were stacked, or it’s not the right kind of ink for the paper.”

Yeah, sorry, I didn’t mean to make it sound like one was a result of the other. The original comment on edges and bleeds just made me think of it.

And generally speaking, if you (Heather) make sure to say something to the printer about it before they start, then if they do end up doing it you can ask them to reprint the cards (probably at little-to-no cost, since it’d definitely be their fault at that point).

Did you see the 100 cards free place on there? http://www.printsmadeeasy.com/free-business-cards.html Sounds neat. Love the card BTW and love the custom knits and knitting kits. Perhaps a mention of the Jayne hats too? Or are they going to be attatched to the hats?

I like it! Yeah, it needs to be “Custom Knitwear Designer” or some such similar title.
